Unfortunately, the speed at which NFA applications are being processed has slowed down dramatically. This is now being used as justification for the ATF to push for more funding in the next budget bill. There is a simpler solution: remove them from the NFA entirely.

Random thought as I was coming out of Harbor Freight this afternoon. I think Harbor Freight's stuff looks better these days because everybody else's stuff has gotten so crappy. I mean, there's still the "high end-real mechanic-buy off the truck-sign away a kidney" stuff, then there's everything else made in Chinar. True story. I know a millennial couple who we were casual friends with. They own a 1920’s house full of beautiful dark oak trim work - excellent condition. And she painted it white. I don’t speak with them anymore because of this (and other reasons). I know that sounds ridiculous but it’s indicative of other major mental issues. Disregard for the wood grain, the carpenter, the past generations that lived in the home and maintained the wood, the future generations that will live in the house once you’re gone. It’s a red line for me.

Everything about the AI industry is unsustainable. Every aspect. The companies are not only not making money, they are burning through tens of billions of dollars a year. The models are progressing faster than the infrastructure can keep up. The infrastructure is being built out at breakneck pace, driving electricity costs through the roof. The infrastructure is creating such immense shortages in components that multiple completely unrelated consumer tech vendors are facing chip shortages. Try to buy a Steam Deck lately? You can't. No available chips. The models are so resource-hungry that each new milestone frontier model release is literally stealing resources from older models in order to run. And I say this with my current job focus being near-100% AI (the rest is quantum computing). I have two books on agentic coding sitting next to me on my desk to start plowing through this morning. I have two AMD Strix Halo machines with 256GB of unified memory clustered on the other side of my desk for local model work. You are witnessing a level of cargo-cultism and overexuberant investing and adoption not seen since the first dot-com boom. And the shakeout will be MUCH more painful, as back then, companies weren't utterly reliant on everything internet. However, companies, particularly large ones, are all-in on AI today due in large part to FOMO, and fear of falling behind competitors.
