I often question my ability to teach, especially in an online setting. I am in that moment right now. I just finished grading an exam for an online class. The following is the grade distribution

friends who have studied criminology (either undergrad or graduate studies), I have a question: how often did you read about or discuss asian americans in your criminology classes? how many of your criminology professors were experts in asian americans?

Wow, some people seem to get really upset when they are told that their grammar in Japanese textbooks doesn't quite reflect real-life grammar

@lynneguist What's always bugged me is the transliteration - it seems to be literal letter-by-letter from יאַרמלקע but I always heard it as just /'yaməkə/ Seeing it spelled "yarmulke" for the first time was completely baffling. (n.b. I grew up in the 70's - 90's east coast USA)

Just finished Heinrich's The Making of Monolingual Japan. A clear and comprehensive overview of how Japan hid it's linguistic diversity during modernization, and the contemporary repercussions. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to understand the modern history of Japanese.

Have you hosted international visitors in Utah? What stuff did they LOVE and what stuff were you surprised they did not love? Any thrilling/disappointing destinations? e.g. My Swedish friends loved the whole desert — even the boring bits — but thought Park City was "fake."
