Shortly after, I walked over to the nearby Old Summer Palace. Standing there among the ruins, seeing the old foundations where those incredible gardens and buildings once stood… I ended up getting quite emotional. British and French troops looted everything and burned it to the ground during the 1860s. The fires lasted three days. Born in England, grew up in Australia, now living here in China, this hit me. The Chinese people are so kind and beautiful, yet the same crowds who did that still smear this country today. I had no idea what really happened before I moved here. Now I know, it disgusts me and it makes me understand China’s strength even more. What they did was wrong on every level.
