Those of you who don't know what authoritarianism looks like...this is it. All the gaslighting about previous presidents "what about...!!! Is bullshit. I've been talking about the slide towards NOW for 30+ years. Those earlier concerns were nothing. Now we are HERE.

Breakfast with fellow Quebec-loving ministers. Yes, yes, if you look closely, I played host to my colleagues with some delicious milk from La Pinte! 😘@DiLebouthillier joined us virtually 💖 #CdnAgDay #ValentinesDay

Antivaccination sentiment is strong among some today, but it's not new. In Montreal in 1885, there were violent riots fighting against smallpox vaccination efforts. Fascinating article here: cmaj.ca/content/193/14…

@JakeVermeer There has been research done on cross sucking at UBC that might be worth looking at. The main issues usually are the amount fed, group size, time at feeder, and weaning age. Looks like you feed enough though, but not sure about the others.

Either side cannot be cherry picking results that only suit their side. Agree with @FoodProfessor that research is not a buffet! We need to understand what the consumer truly wants with this issue.

Recognizing the problem is the first step definitely. But then understanding what the problem is would be the next step. Is it butter hardness? Environment issue? Both? Right now the narrative seems to being going either way. Important to understand that now with #buttergate
The Food Professor@FoodProfessor

For weeks, dairy farmers have been telling Canadians nothing is wrong with our butter. We're imagining things...all a hoax. #ButterGate The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one.

@FoodProfessor From a social science perspective how do you go about dealing with farm gate practices to consumers with little knowledge on agriculture? Should we use an educational approach or focus on a social acceptance (social licence) approach?

What we have learned over the last two weeks is this. Product characteristics at retail are just one issue, not the most significant one. As a social scientist, I hope ethical and moral implications of farmgate practices will also be in scope of the investigation.

@FoodProfessor Don't count this as a win, as it still hasn't been proven that palm is the issue!

#CdnDairy farmers have listened attentively to concerns over the use of animal feed supplements. DFC has formed an expert working group, and pending completion of its work, is asking dairy farmers to consider alternatives to palm supplements. more: bit.ly/2Mq9gQn #CdnAg

@SimonSomogyiAFI @FoodProfessor Agreed. One thing to keep in mind in the dairy palm oil use question is that palm oil is not fed to cows. By-products from palm oil fractionation for human use are used.

I come from a long family tradition of farming - so farmers will always hold a special place in my heart. It was great to speak with the Dairy Farmers of Canada and Dairy Farmers of BC on how their industry has adapted to the pandemic.
