@JohnRentoul The recent @PPFIdeas podcast examined the counterfactual of the Industrial Revolution happening in Japan, the French Revolution happening in China. It was very enlightening.

@Helen_Whately Yes, that's the choice the last government made and they just got voted out by an electorate who absolutely had enough of them and wanted things done differently.

I can help Bridget out here. It's passengers, taxpayers, or both. Being in government is about making choices. Giving train drivers a bumper raise with nothing in return costs money. Money that could be spent not cutting winter fuel payments. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/…

@RobDotHutton yes celluloid may be more romantic but I can remember a viewing at the Scala (RIP) that was interrupted when the copy of the 1960s evil hippy bikers b-movie we were watching caught fire...

@twlldun They both, apparently, regularly eat and drink in the pubs and cafes around my tiny town and I'm still not really sure who they are and why they're famous so being William Hague's offspring is as good as reason as any.

The unusual and slightly unsettling experience of a detailed piece in the Spectator musing on the history, cultural importance and modern evolution of something I have literally never, ever heard of: Gifford’s Circus. Am I meant to have heard of this? Has everyone else?

@twlldun The stencil work on these recent London works is shockingly bad. At least Vettriano can do basic technique.

Godspeed You Black Tamperer (ft Maya)
Seen some backsliding on the timeline on this subject, with people showing some dreadful weakness and admitting some element of “admiration” or “wanting to hand it to him” so just a reminder that Banksy is Jack Vettriano for people who like trip-hop.

@Samfr that quote really wound me up. Maybe the full article is more nuanced but "Clinton had a bigger lead than Harris and lost and Biden had a bigger lead than Harris and won" is not the type of analysis I'd expect with FT subscription rates being as expensive as they are.

There have now been: 1024 arrests 575 charges Following the rioting in England. For comparison, in 2011 there were around 3000 arrests during England’s summer riots.

@PoliticalUklist I think MPs might well back him but think the membership view him as a candidate of the failed past. Same as Patel.

Strangely, I currently have absolutely no idea who is going to win the Tory leadership contest but my priors suggest it'll be the looney or the person pretending to be the looney, who'll do it.

@GE2024_watcher I feel like parts of the media are gaslighting us when it comes to Jenrick. He's clearly a non-starter. I'm betting his ceiling amongst Tory MPs is low. Whilst I suspect Kemi will blow herself up somehow by the final round. She doesn't the self -discipline.

@GE2024_watcher It doesn't really matter. Whoever wins has more chance of getting replaced before the next general election than actually going on to win that election. I imagine it will be Patel vs Tugendhat.
