Utah was short 100,000 houses before the 10% mass migration population surge tax payers funded.  Two job families were taxed to import 300,000 people and while their own children could not afford to buy a $550,000 "starter" home.  Two job family children were forced to migrate out of Utah. Many people may be wondering why Utah, despite being a deep red state, keeps electing horrible milquetoast Republicans. Ultimately the blame for that problem lies mostly on one bill that permanently ruined the state’s elections. This bill is known by many names, but most commonly as SB54. This bill was passed in 2014, enabling candidates who lose the convention (almost always because they’re weak or bad candidates) to gather signatures allowing them to bypass the convention and go straight to the primary. This is a problem because there a lot of democrats that register as republicans in Utah so they can influence the primaries to get more left-leaning candidates, whereas they don’t have nearly as much power in the caucus system. The caucus delegates are also far more informed and politically active, so they are far more educated about the candidates they’re voting for than the average primary voter. This means that amazing candidates like Mike Lee will win at the convention, then the losing candidate will buy enough signatures to get onto the primary ballot and win there due to malicious saboteurs and uninformed voters. Mike Lee was elected in 2011 before this went into effect, and every senator, governor, and representative we’ve had since then have been weak and flimsy; such as Mitt Romney, John Curtis, Spencer Cox, and Blake Moore. John Curtis lost at convention, Gov. Cox lost at convention, Blake Moore lost at convention, as did many others. They all bought their way onto the ballot regardless, often using taxpayer funds to do so. To save Utah we have to repeal that law. Until then our candidates will become increasingly bad, and we’ll be powerless to stop them.
