An ugly end, but a phenomenal season for the Charlotte Hornets that they should be able to build on. All-NBA caliber campaign from LaMelo, some All-Star level flashes from Brandon Miller (beginning of the streak in mid-january was SPECIAL). Kon's my ROY, but even if he doesn't win it, he certainly played at a high enough level to 1) warrant the convo and 2) feel really good about what he's going to grow into. What a year from Moussa Diabate, on both ends. Growth as a scorer, some LOUD defensive performances with his comfort in space. Zoom all the way out, and it's hard not to be impressed with what Charles Lee has established on both ends. Not easy to build that kind of flow w/o a no-doubt-about-it rim pressure threat. Not easy to have a top-five defense for FOUR MONTHS with obvious holes in the personnel. That takes schematic understanding and flexibility, but it also takes a whole lot of buy-in. Lee ultimately got it. Future's really bright in Charlotte, and it feels really good to say and witness that in real time.

This is the play right here, but the UNC decision makers might be thinking they’re the UNC of 15 years ago with no clue how to operate in this new NIL landscape.

Carolina’s issue is they’re trying to buy a stock after it skyrockets. They could’ve had Lloyd or Maye 5 years ago, now it’s too late. Michigan & Arizona gambled on coaches & they won. UNC likely will have to do the same with a lesser known coach. But they want a home run hire.

I said from the start I believed North Carolina would swing for the fences on coaching candidates and end up with Mark Byington. Sticking to that (for now).

@BDAHT He and staff have had teams that have been consistently inconsistent. Sometimes it’s game to game; sometimes it’s within one game. That’s been an issue from season 1. That can be acceptable for most programs. Like it or not, agree or not, it’s not for UNC.

But y’all act like Coaches don’t have “collapses”. Izzo. Cal. Self. Few. Golden. Hell, even Scheyer! He’s had some of the best teams in the history of Duke with what to show for it? No way we shoulda beat Paolo nem… twice? “Hubert can’t Coach” is nonsense imo

@JoshGrahamShow Mark Byington from Vandy. Very good culture fit for UNC. Professional demeanor; likely to play well with administration and boosters. Offensive intelligence without being gimmicky. He’s also attainable without having a huge buyout (I suspect) compared with the mega-names.

@ncbags The other issue is this for me: yes, I think a change is due. However, given the debacle of the football coaching hire, and the debacle of the Dean dome renovate/move issue, I think there are larger issues that one coaching change won’t solve. That’s a deeper concern.
