Coatbridge Sunnyside is on my patch I response cover part of this section between Blairhill and Drumgelloch A nice well kept station next to the Summerlee Heritage Centre. Nice to see John Cameron CBE will unveil the plaque who was instrumental in Scottish steam preservation

On Wednesday, 13 May, the National Transport Trust will celebrate 200 years of the Monkland & Kirkintilloch Railway, recognised as Scotland’s first modern railway. At 11am, John Cameron CBE will unveil a special Red Wheel plaque at Coatbridge Sunnyside station, marking the route’s place in transport history. 🛤️ A proud moment celebrating 200 years of railway heritage ❤️

As we go about our busy lives, we rarely take the time to stop and think about the small and large inventions that make our lives a little easier today. Back in 1826, the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway marked the beginning of Scotland’s modern railways. This was thanks to John Birkinshaw’s new wrought iron rails, which were strong enough to carry the weight of steam locomotives and soon replaced the wooden and brittle cast iron rails. The beginnings were modest, with the first carriages filled with coal and pulled by horses, but this early development paved the way for steam powered locomotives that would soon carry passengers across the country. 🚂📸
