Are You Seeing Some of Those Arrested and Confessing? Do They Look Like Fulani Herders? For As Long as Everything is Islamization, Fulanization and Northernization to You... Progress and Joy is Not Coming oh! Abuse Me All You Want but Benue State Must Look inward for Solutions to the Insecurities in the State!

Ignore The Propaganda: Babangida Actually Described The January 15, 1966 Coup as a Coup With "Unmistakably Ethnic Colouration". Contrary to what some pundits are saying, Major Adewale Ademoyega's book, 'Why We Struck,' actually corroborated what General Babangida wrote about the coup in his just-released autobiography. What they wrote is the same as what General Obasanjo and I have written about copiously. The January 15, 1966 coup began as a nationalistic coup and ended as a very tribalistic coup. Major Adewale Ademoyega, in his book, 'Why We Struck', revealed that he had been tricked into participating in the coup by Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna in the belief that politicians from all regions would be ARRESTED.  Below is an excerpt from that book: "The next most important cause of our failure was the behaviour of Ifeajuna himself. Having seen that Ironsi had got loose and was already raising troops against us, Ifeajuna took Okafor with him and both of them suddenly disappeared from our midst. This raises the serious question of whether or not there was a common collusion between them and whether Okafor's failure to arrest the GOC was not a case of deliberate or willful omission." This is precisely what General Babangida said in his book, when he wrote that: "From that moment, the "putsch" was infiltrated by outsiders to its supposed original intention, and it took on an UNMISTAKABLY ETHNIC COLOURATION." People like me cannot be bullied. Look at what I went through at the hands of Obidients during the last election, and I stood firm. One of the reasons why the January 15, 1966 coup opened the Pandora's Box in Nigeria and destroyed the almost idyllic communal coexistence between the North and South pre-1966 is the fact that Majors Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu, Anuforo, Onwuategwu, Okafor and Captain Nwobosi, who were the ones who did the killings, were not sensitive to religious sensibilities enough to have planned their coup after Ramadan.  They killed their victims during the holy month of Ramadan, and that was [symbolically and demonstrably a hateful act] unforgivable on the part of {the core} Northern {Muslim} officers led by Lt. Colonel Murtala Muhammed. Almost as bad is the fact that either through omission or commission, all those who were not killed during the participation of the coup were of the Igbo ethnic group, but those they killed were from other ethnicities, except for Lt. Colonel Arthur Unegbe [who was not on the kill list, anyway, and his killing was incidental].  The only reason he was killed was that he was the Quartermaster-General in charge of the armoury.  When Chris Anuforo went to his house to demand the keys to the armoury, he refused and was shot. He was NOT on the original list of people to be killed.  Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna was the coup leader. He killed the Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, probably the cleanest and most upright politician in Nigeria's history. He also killed his [Ifeajuna’s] boss, [Brigadier] Zakariya Maimalari, [a Northerner, and the only specially-trained top military officer, Sandhurst, as the others, including Ironsi, rose through the ranks.] Maimalari had escaped from Major Okafor, whom Ifeajuna had sent to kill him. He was barely 100 meters to the safety of the Federal Guards Brigade when he saw Ifeajuna's Mercedes Benz car. He was so relieved at seeing Ifeajuna, whom he had just hosted some hours ago at his home, that he came out of the bushes. As his car approached, he stopped Ifeajuna, who greeted him with a hail of bullets, killing him on the spot.  Ifeajuna was himself executed by Lt. Colonel Emeka Ojukwu on September 25, 1967. "It was heinously callous for Nzeogwu to have murdered Sir Ahmadu Bello and his wife, Hafsatu, because not only were they eminently adored by many but also because they were said not to have put up a fight. From that moment the putsch was infiltrated by "outsiders" to its supposed original intention and it took on an unmistakable ethnic coloration compounded by the fact that there were no related coup activities in the Eastern Region"- President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, 'A Journey In Service: An Autobiography', February 2025. I hate to burst your bubble but there is NOWHERE in IBB's book that he said that the coup of January 15th 1966 was NOT an Igbo coup. In fact he alluded to the contrary when he said the coup had taken on an "unmistakable ethnic coloration". That is what he wrote and that is the reality. The coup was an ethnic one and that ethnicity were the Igbo! Those that have misinterpreted his words and have said that he wrote that the coup was not an Igbo coup are either misguided and misinformed or are being mischievous. They have a poor understanding of the English language and in the main have not even read the book and instead are relying on erroneous social media qoutes and well crafted disinformation. I suggest that they procure a copy of the book, read it from cover to cover and stop attempting to revise history by misinterpreting the words of the esteemed author. IBB, in his characteristic manner, was charitable to the Igbos in his book but that does not give anyone licence to misinterpret his words and conclusions or use them in an attempt to revise history. The facts are clear and they are as follows. 99% of the officers that planned and executed the Jan. 15th 1966 coup and that were involved in the mutiny were Igbo and 99% of those that were murdered by them were non-Igbo military officers and political leaders in some cases including their wives. We owe it to the memory of those that were so callously slaughtered not to sugar coat the bitter truth, not to revise history and not to tell lies. The coup was UNMISTAKEABLY an Igbo one and IBB made this very clear when he wrote about its "ethnic coloration". I urge all those that have a poor understanding of the English language and that cannot read more than three lines of any book or essay to stop using his words to establish their revisionist and patently dishonest narrative and their futile attempt to perpetuate an age-old lie. The truth is that the Jan. 15th 1966 coup WAS an Igbo one and I am glad to say that IBB has confirmed it. This is a FACT and as our journalist friends will tell you 'facts are sacred and opinion is cheap". (FFK)
