Rick Pitino shares how a Wall Street legend changed the way he recruits. When Pitino asked Mario Gabelli where he found his best talent...University of Chicago? Harvard? Wharton? - Gabelli's answer surprised him: "No. I look for PhDs - Poor, Hungry, and Driven people." Pitino adapted it for his players: Passionate. Hungry. Driven. 1. Passionate - They love the work, not just the results. You can't teach passion - it's either there or it isn't. 2. Hungry - They show up and do the work consistently - they're never satisfied. They outwork, outprepare, and outlast. 3. Driven - They have direction. They don't wait to be pushed - they take ownership of themselves, their actions, and their attitude. Three three traits that compound over time. (🎥 ISSA/INTERCLEAN Conference 2014)

Rick Pitino doesn't just recruit talent - he recruits PHDs. Not the degree. The mindset. Here's what it means and why it's one of my favorite new acronyms. (📌Bookmark this)

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson after the 60-47 win at Oklahoma State: "It's way more important to win than look good. There's a lot of unemployed pretty offensive coaches. Their teams couldn't guard. So they couldn't keep their jobs."

Should hypertrophy be the main goal for athletes? Sometimes yes, but honestly most of the time it is a secondary goal. That said, many athletes benefit substantially from going back and forth between strength & hypertrophy emphasis. Make sure exercise selection is appropriate.

Prioritizing hypertrophy requires training close to failure. For most people squatting to failure, something else fails before the legs do (low back, spinal erectors, aerobic system, skill etc) Integrating Hack squats allow the legs to fatigue/fail first, driving greater growth

Squats are one of my favorite exercises for developmental athletes. Simple & effective exercise for improving strength, power, coordination, bone density, work capacity, fortitude etc. But when it comes to hypertrophy, are squats the most effective? Let’s dive into nuance. 1/2

"I think the “this changes everything” coach is more terrifying than the “always done it this way coach”... the “this changes everything” coach values what they do so little that they’ll switch up everything at the drop of a hat." - @CoachAlanBishop simplifaster.com/articles/train…

This is one of the fastest ways to drive strength and hypertrophy adaptations, however, it is also one of the least utilized training methods outside of a few coaching tress that heavily emphasize it.

Overloaded Eccentrics The more we emphasize “pushing” eccentric strength capacities, the more powerful the adaptation when “pulling” the concentric capacities to close off the increased strength deficit.

Very rarely do I say that a book is a must read, but this book is a must read if you’re a strength and conditioning coach. John Bloom just handed you over 500 pages of mentorship amazon.com/Strength-Numbe… Please take my advice. Buy the book.
