I'm very disappointed that the House once again ignored DC residents to pass legislation that would make our communities less safe. The legislation would codify the presence of federal agents on our streets and encourage further harassment and kidnapping of DC residents.
After a D.C. police officer was shot in the head and shoulder while he sat in his patrol car in 1997, the man convicted of that murder was given a life sentence without parole. Now, he may be allowed to walk free under a controversial D.C. law. wapo.st/4rzTi3o

🧵People who work w/ youth understand that curfews, over policing etc actually induce this behavior. Young people are searching for POWER, agency, belonging. When we take it away (you can’t be here, can’t do this)- teens push back harder. DC Man Pleads Guilty to Illegally Possessing a Machine Gun Inside a Charter High School. James Adrian Brewer, 19, a resident of the District of Columbia, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to unlawful possession of a machine gun, announced U.S. Attorney @JudgeJeanine According to court documents, Brewer was attending the Goodwill Excel Center Adult Charter School in Northwest Washington on Sept. 3, 2025, when he was observed by a school administrator to have what appeared to be a firearm in his waistband. When confronted, Brewer surrendered the pistol to the administrator, who then turned it over to Metropolitan Police Department officers. The firearm was later determined to be a Glock 19, 9mm pistol that previously had been reported stolen. The Glock was loaded with 23 rounds of ammunition. The gun was fitted with a switch-style machine gun conversion device (MCD) which allowed it to function as a fully automatic weapon. As part of his plea, Brewer admitted to possessing the handgun at the Goodwill Excel Center Adult Charter School and further admitted to knowing that it was fitted with an MCD that converted the pistol into a machine gun. Judge Jia M. Cobb scheduled sentencing for May 28, 2026.

With a heavy heart, the DC Police Union mourns the line-of-duty death of our brother, Officer Terry Bennett. Officer Bennett, an 8-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department and a proud member of our union, was tragically struck by a vehicle while assisting a motorist on I-695 on December 23, 2025. Officer Bennett was a dedicated public servant, a born and raised Washingtonian, and a stellar police officer who committed his life to serving and protecting his community. He exemplified the values of professionalism, compassion, and selfless service that define our profession. We extend our deepest condolences to Officer Bennett’s family, loved ones, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his memory will forever remain a part of this department and this city. We ask the public to keep Officer Bennett’s family and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers as we honor his life, service, and ultimate sacrifice.
Federal DOT trying to scrap road safety in DC. Wrong to frame this about $. While it would have a huge impact on city finances, more damaging effect is on safety. Just as we’re lowering traffic injuries & deaths, this would give a green light to dangerous drivers on our roads.
