I expect random right wingers to suggest abolishing the Commonwealth or Monarchy I don’t expect it from people who consider themselves serious political thinkers. Yes, we have to be bold, reform and abolish lots of things like the Supreme Court. That’s precisely why getting bogged down in leaving things that do not obstruct are agenda in any way but actually create enemies on our own side is ridiculous. Yes, we are not ‘conservatives’ we don’t just conserve things for the sake of them but we also don’t abolish things for the sake of them. Are black cabs too nostalgic and twee? Are they a threat to us? Should we scrap the state religion because the Archbishop is too woke and leave the door open for a state Caliphate? Or should we just USE state power to put in a decent Archbishop? Welding power seriously means using leverage more than exit. The Commonwealth can commit to 3% military spending and where would they buy their supplies from? The King can be gifted the power to build Poundburys in return for never saying anything woke again. The BBC regulations can be rewritten so they can’t cast black Henry VIIIs. Having power means co-opting institutions more than you flounce out of them.

Just being a member of the Commonwealth is an implicit acceptance of at least the relative benefits of the British Empire. Nobody is in the Commemorative Third Reich Club. Countries in it can bitch and moan about reparations but their very membership of the Commonwealth is tacit acknowledgment that we are better than them.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has interacted with the execrable Chris Parry. Only weeks ago he was forced to issue a grovelling apology after telling David Lammy he should ‘go home’ to the Caribbean, clearly on thin ice Reform UK have suspended him following his comments regarding the Hatzola ambulance antisemitic attack. Arrogant, bigoted and not fit for public office. Parry lasted a mere four months before proving to be too toxic even for Reform. Once again their vetting has proved to be found wanting. Just because you were a Rear Admiral doesn’t mean you are cut out for a political career.
