At the tourism commission today they gave an update on the rebrand of Dirty 6th We are now calling it 'Old 6th' Stream Realty, which owns 20+ 6th street buildings is doing a major investment to update the area. It will preserve and restore the historic buildings.

Another project connect nugget from yesterday's presentation: The plan is to have traffic signals controlled so the train doesn't make stops between stops. But this wont be possible for major streets like MLK and Cesar Chavez. So expect the train to stop at red lights there.

@MattMackowiak The district needs to be split up. Each high school becomes its own district. Parental control is then restored. Decentralize the power. Decrease the DSA and degen powers. As a bonus no more Robinhood stealing funds. Responsible parents and their children can flourish again.

The entire AISD board should be replaced.

In 2024 AISD won a property tax election. The district’s deficit then was $119m. I recall seeing property tax bills go up 15-20%. It is incredible as it is infuriating to see that after a few years of greater taxpayer effort (or pain) the problem got worse.

So Travis CAD increased appraised value in my Austin neighborhood 15-20% when actual market values are down 2-6%. Make this make sense other than the Austin City Council using influence to raise money for their crazy projects through the Austin homeowners.

The city dropped these light rail flyers off today. Sadly I missed the drop off. In my Modern American Cities course at UT in what I believe was 97 or 98 Professor Davies said they don't work. They cost too much. They don't move enough people. They are always subsidized heavily by those that don't ride them. I tend to side with that thought still. In peak Austin 90s's we didn't have transit stabbings. We had Liberty Lunch. Will this move enough people to me that are not homeless from downtown and East Riverside that it will offset the ballooning expenses. Will it keep many from even wanting to drive here with the even harder to navigate traffic during contruction? Does it even matter at all when it is unlikely to be done by 2033, and unlikely to stick to the updated budget that has already blown up. Notice the current price tag is nowhere to be seen. Nor the expected tax increase I'll have to absorb. How much is the current estimate adjusted for inflation? Breakdown of the ~$7.1 billion capital cost (approximate shares): Light rail + civil works: ~46% ($3.1–3.2B) Real estate: ~15% ($1.0–1.1B) Maintenance facility + vehicles: ~15% ($1.0–1.1B) Professional services: ~16% ($1.1–1.2B) Unallocated contingency: ~8% ($0.52–0.54B) So that would buy around 300,000 Cybercabs. So what is the point of this? Mass transit only works in a high trust society no matter the cost. With both Garza's actively working on behalf of anarcho tyranny will any amount of paid transit glazers get the ridership the current light rail lacks? Somehow I'm skeptical. Perhaps that is based off past performance of Capitol Metro, my studies at UT, proximity to a bus stop, and half a century of Austin experience in my gray matter.
