American money owns a lot of English football, but it still hasn’t turned the game into an NBA-style franchise system. Clubs can’t just be moved, failure can mean relegation, the league is connected to the whole football pyramid and fans still have enough power to stop ideas like the Super League. They are institutions, not entertainment brands that can simply be relocated or protected from failure

What Gianni is trying to do is to divest the commercial aspect of FIFA from governance aspect of FIFA without losing commercial growth .
Right now , the World Cup is executed by a team within FIFA .
Revenue growth is majorly via sponsorship and percentage of revenue .
He wants a commercial entity owned by FIFA to take this up .
He is trying to adopt a SUSTAINABLE model for business development.
As a finance person , I get it .
He just hasn’t handled stake holder engagement very well hence the outcry .
And by the way , what he is proposing isn’t new at all .

Why? This particular World Cup blew all ceilings where finances were concerned. They found a way to make more money leveraging the American sports culture (around quarters and half-time shows). All this in their original shape; no feathers ruffled. Why is he now suggesting 20% going private, and then inducing people with a $40m payment. It’s not his company; the World Cup has survived for so long this way, and has even shown this year that it can be profitable within the limits. Talk about CAF/Africa (for example) is the same issue with every facet of life. Always needing a handout, always needing aid. Why can’t they develop models that work. Football cannot be removed from the livelihood of people. If people earn more, they will be more open to pay more for entertainment. If people are safe, they will go to stadiums. Maybe governments should fix that instead of waiting for handout. Let’s not mix issues! Infantino was totally WRONG! No sugar coating.

Hot take: Football doesn’t capture as much commercial value as many other sports (NFL, NBA, F1, Golf) and far under performs its commercial potential, despite being the world’s most popular sport.
The disparity in spending power between the Premier League (which only gained its dominance by reforming its structure) and other European leagues is proof of this.
Football should always be looking at ways to make the sport more popular, more lucrative and find more value for every nation on the planet, not just European nations which have always dominated the sport because they’ve traditionally been wealthier nations and have a head start in having more developed football heritage.

Yes it’s a global juggernaut but, as I said, football under performs its potential.
The idea that football should just stand still and never push to evolve and become bigger is not possible. That’s stagnation and will lead to decline.
Football always needs to be growing, especially in a world where people’s attention spans are increasingly being drawn by other activities like gaming, film, tv and other entertainment products.
The work FIFA and other organisations do at a grassroots level helps develop and sustain future audiences for football which will keep the sport popular for the next generations.
So the idea that it should just stand still and be happy with its current state is not a feasible one.
