In my view, Gaelic should be pronounced "gay-lic" in English. Gaelic is not a Gaelic word. It is an English word which takes the ethnic term, Gael/Gaels, and adds the suffix, -ic, just like Celtic, Slavic, Icelandic, Arabic, Germanic, etc. It is just a coincidence that it is close to the word for the language in Gaelic, gàidhlig. Before this learned construction in the 1700's, Gaelic was overwhelmingly called Irish or Irse. There was an early attempt in the late 1500's to phonetically render the language into English, which produced Gathelik, but the modern English word Gaelic comes from a 1770's coining based on the ethnic term, Gael. You don't call Chinese, Zhongwen, or Japanese, Nihongo, and by the same principle you should not say "gaalic" in English simply to imitate the sound of the language.
