If you had to reduce the creation of America to a single idea, it would be the simple but revolutionary notion that human beings can rule themselves—that we do not need a king, an emperor, a dictator, an autocrat to make decisions for us. We can govern ourselves. That was a radical idea in the 18th century. But that's what's on the line in this election. One candidate doesn't think you can make decisions about what's best for your own life—that he must do it—and one advocates freedom and choice and that you know best what is right for you. And you do. #VoteKamala

Mark Kelly on Fox News: "Mexico is the US's biggest trading partner. If Donald Trump kills trade with Mexico, he's killing jobs here in the US, and when you combine that with what he said about the CHIPS Act, his economic plan is really really awful for the state of Arizona."

Former president Donald Trump on Monday threatened tariffs as high as 100 percent on Mexico, America’s largest trading partner last year, in yet another escalation of the drastic protectionist promises of his 2024 presidential campaign. wapo.st/4hC2ron

Re those harms, consider that the US imports billions of dollars per year in fresh produce from Mexico (around 2/3 of all US vegetable imports and 1/2 of fruit & nut imports, plus around 90% of all avocados). Now, double their price or just wipe em out of the market entirely.

NEW: Trump today threatens *100%* tariffs on *all imports* from Mexico, America's largest trading partner A 25% tariff alone (which Trump also threatened) would amount to $100B/yr, or $1 trillion tax/decade Remarkable escalation day before election washingtonpost.com/business/2024/…

Trump Spox Cheung on Trump’s comments: “Trump was stating that the media was in danger, in that they were protecting him &, therefore, were in great danger themselves & should have a protective shield also. He was actually looking out for their welfare far more than his own.”

Please listen to Harrison Ford’s words. I get that there are Republicans out there who don’t wanna vote for a Democrat, but his words are powerful and it should at least make you pause if you are a republican.

Gov. Walz: There will come a day where you're going to be sitting on that rocking chair, and the little ones are going to ask you, ‘When everything was on the line, and there was somebody running who asked to be a dictator and wanted to overturn the Constitution and talked about using the military against our people, what did you do to stop that from happening?’ Volunteer now: go.kamalaharris.com

A century ago, Germany’s democracy was hijacked by a bombastic and charismatic tyrant — and in this five-minute video, you’ll learn how he did it. Why did I produce this? Because I believe that history is speaking to us, and all too often, those who refuse to learn from it are doomed to repeat it. As you watch, imagine filling out a Bingo card filled with Germany 1933/USA 2024 parallels: big rallies, rage-filled and hateful rhetoric, simple answers promising quick and easy solutions to complicated problems, empty promises of a great-again future, scapegoating outsiders, and political enemies silenced on day one. And notice the caring wisdom and concern from my German friends as they share these lessons from their dark history. It’s hard to understand how Trump could, on the eve of a tight election, paint a picture of Liz Cheney before a firing squad by actually saying, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? And let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face.” You can’t get into the mind of a dictator with an insatiable appetite for power — but you can recognize the playbook they all seem to follow. Just watch this clip. It’s excerpted from my hourlong public television special “The Story of Fascism in Europe,” which is streaming free (and ad-free) at ricksteves.com/fascism. If you care about our democracy and love our country, it’s hard to stop watching. When I produced this in 2018, I hoped this day would never come in our country. But November 5th is upon us. Please share this with anyone in your life who might need a reminder that the stakes are high...and this is very real.
