@GarrieIrons

If in doubt about my meaning, I'm probably being sarcastic.

@davepl1968 @mark_slapinski You elect the member, not the party. (In my country at least) If you're not sufficiently politically literate to grasp that, there are plenty of great political educators in almost every political jurisdiction and affiliation to help with that.

@davepl1968 @Machi1Nne For a lot of religious people with cancer, their religious answer is either: - pray harder - donate more or - it is the price of being a sinner All those things make the cancer (to live with) worse not better

@davepl1968 Why did you not code one that worked on "a similar device" to the one you were testing? (Seems like an underlying utility for testing if not for the actual operating system being shipped)

I wrote the new SmartDrv for MS-DOS 6.2 (the new CD-ROM caching stuff, write-back, etc). This was all in pure x86 assembly, and while I was past counting cycles in the margins by then, I still cared about perf. I asked for a stopwatch, because I'm wired that way and wanted to time things, track my progress, and so on. Would Encarta load 8x faster or 10x faster? Could I make it even faster? I was told no. Too expensive. At Microsoft in 1993. Which kind of blew my mind, as we were printing money so fast they literally had to weigh it instead of counting it. Or that might have been a Breaking Bad episode; the details are hazy. But I'm certain we were very profitable. In a way, it set the tone. This was before "shrimp and weenies", but at least in MS-DOS, we were too busy making the bacon to partake of many shrimp anyway. While I clearly resent it enough to bring it up 30+ years later, it went a long way toward setting the fiscal accountability I brought to the career. I was taught early not to waste, and never did.

From 1980-2000 half of software engineering was managing resource (clock time, disk, and ram) usage. For the first ten years every Microsoft eng got a stop watch. Extras were in the supply room. Tough to express just how much effort went into this. All of us have stories.

@leeroyjones73 I can walk 1km (.6 mile I guess) to get to a supermarket, fast food, "drug store" (chemist), Cafe, Bar, bottle shop. Without crossing a single road. 🇦🇺

Do people not realise that the reason they need a car to get their shopping at a supermarket is because supermarkets have killed off the local shops that you used to be able to walk to because people now drive to supermarkets to get their shopping?

@GarrieIrons @purplepingers It’s a bit like how cricket rules can change because cricket is a sport people partake in so they can play cricket.

When you were the communications manager for a billionaire’s company that she inherited from her racist father I guess it’s technically your job to step in and bat for those poor billionaires and the system of capitalism they benefit from.

Should I use float or decimal in sql? I have used float and the LLM suggested I use decimal because money needs to be exact, and Reddit chuds are saying “only an idiot would use float in a database” Who is wrong here Is this a ‘hot liquids in plastic containers’ situation?

@davepl1968 Surely the zealot is the one who has opinions about what other people own? It isn't enough to be pleased with their V8, they have to suggest other people's lives would be better with one?

@waggacrow And for the dairy industry, for the "lead cows" this is absolutely normal. They have cows they treat like sheep dogs: "Jessie, go back get those girls down there" - and she will. "Mary, push through" because 3 cows are stopped at the same miking stall. Harder at 300 cows tho

At those distances, an EV should not be your only car, but an EV should still be your second car. For people that take infrequent 8-hour roadtrips, and who have access to charging, it's a no brainer. But you do you. I drive a twin-turbo V8, so I don't have the religion. But the "second car" part is key.

It's been brutally cold in Eastern Canada for weeks. Temperatures hitting -40. Sometimes I drive 400-500km a day. Tell me how well an EV would work for me.... I'll wait.

The CGT discount is the most unfair tax handout there is. It is exacerbating inequality and locking a generation out of home ownership. Enough is enough. No more tinkering around the edges of the housing crisis. Labor must scrap the CGT discount in the next budget.
