@ramez The tell was never the growth rate. It's what the growth rate does to terminal value. One of these curves compounds. The other pays a fat dividend to keep you from looking at the slope.
Invest in the exponent, not the eulogy.

3/PS: financialization didn't solve itself. The AI capex boom is what capital looks like when it finally escapes financialization — and that's one sector. The rest of the market is still cap-weighted autopilot betting on incumbents.

1/You're half right: the "green transition" framing was always weak. But the weakness was calling it green — not calling it necessary.
Reframe it as an energy buildout priced by physics instead of virtue, and the AI boom isn't the alternative to it. It's the accelerant.
Samuel Hammond 🦉@hamandcheese
The AI boom is doubly upsetting to progressive economic commentators because it a) shows "financialization" was largely a macro story that eventually solved itself, and b) the boom is being driven by AI rather than their hoped-for "green transition".

4/You've made the definitive case that we have the fuel — I'd argue you've mistaken it for the reactor.

1/ @ScottNolan "America's Next 250" is the best case I've read that energy is the master variable of the next 250 years. I agree with almost all of it — which is exactly why I want to pick one friendly fight. 🧵

Hey guess what? It's damn near 2024 and the kids are pissed off that we didn't start fixing the climate crisis decades ago. They should be.

the way to change the economy is to radically change the direction and velocity of new capital investments, away from destruction and towards regeneration. Not the same as ESG.

'trillions for financial stability...well nigh a trillion dollars on the Pentagon budget and foreign security, a few hundred billion per annum on Bidenomics and new industrial policy...and a pittance for the global climate fund. That gives you an idea of priorities' @adam_tooze

@AlexSteffen IMO, individual behavioral change was never going to work. As a rule, I believe that if your theory of change requires a change in human nature, it is a non-starter. Systemic change, actualized by capital flows, is the only approach that was ever going to work
English

@drvolts Got to wonder how much higher that multiplier is for humans. You know, cuz we don't fly. 200x?

Remember this: the crazies on the far right and left are the minority in the real world. They dominate social media because it is anti-social & rewards behavior that would leave you with no friends in reality. But they are hard to find if you lift your eyes up from your phone.

@Schwarzenegger Couldn't agree with you more big guy! I believe there's a big chunk of the population that lives somewhere in the middle. Trouble is they usually don't have big voices, or say shocking things, so you cant hear them over the noise.

Just read @mustafasuleyman's #TheComingWave
1. Pace of AI/biotech leaves no sector unchanged. New era of innovation
2. Must overcome biases that dismiss downside risks
3. Containing progress is unrealistic. Can't stifle innovation, only shape it
