@slmandel I’m aware of that. It doesn’t mean they (B10) can’t collude and use leverage. Either conference can always suggest they will take their ball and go home, and the Big Ten has everyone else (broadcast media and conferences). B10 could also just offer TX GA OK LSU membership ;)

@GaryLutwen The Big Ten and SEC are the only 2 with authority to make changes to the CFP. The others have no vote.

One vexing question hovers over the 24-team CFP push: Who’s going to pay for it? ESPN was the only bidder last time and is clearly against 24. Fox wants 24 but is not exactly swimming in cash. The conferences need at least $250M to make it work. nytimes.com/athletic/72910…

@thjcopark2701 It’s not my preference, but two auto bids are still preferential to one, and I would like to think they wouldn’t be locked into seeds 23 and 24. Gonzaga has been a mid major in hoops forever, and still has been seeded fairly.

Interesting idea for a 24 team playoff. G6 play in games for the CFP bid. Sounds exactly like what they are doing in college basketball to mid majors. Give access but always the lowest possible form of access.
Gary Lutwen@GaryLutwen

@OS_Beaver You can even take the top four G6 conference champs and create two play-in games for the CFP…

Is this the best 24 team CFP model for autobids? SEC-6 B1G-6 ACC-3 Big12-3 G6-2 ND-1 At large-3 Puts a guaranteed G6 on both sides of the bracket. Gives an outside chance at a 3rd deserving G6 in years where all 3 are ranked in final Top 24 rankings. P2 often will get 7 each.

@DanWolken It is. It keeps fan bases engaged. The issue with what ESPN has been trying to do to college football is if you consolidate at twenty “brands”, then a big chunk of viewers won’t care anymore, & ratings will tank. March Madness works because everyone gets a shot at some point.

I agree with the theory that it benefits the sport if more programs can get juice by having access to the playoff. But if 2/3 of the programs can say that, you’ve probably devalued a playoff bid to the point of diminishing returns for the whole project.

@Otheryanmurphy Clippers do not want Kyrie. They are keeping Kawhi and Garland and building the team around them. They are considering using their draft capital to acquire a young star or to move up and take AJ.

With Jason Kidd now gone, I could see a deal similar to this unfold with the Clippers and Mavericks especially if Kawhi resigns.

@APH00PS lol. Clippers aren’t trading their best player this offseason. They are only trading the #5 pick to move up to take AJ.

A 24-team College Football Playoff has become the sports version of AI Nobody asked for it, and almost nobody seems to actually like or want it, but decision-makers are very busy trying to convince you that it's inevitable whether or not anyone understands the implications. @slmandel @dannykanell Yeah, they got to pick their opponents for nonconference games. They only had four road games, and only one was against a ranked team…and they scheduled an extra week off to prep for that game. SMH.

@dannykanell Your argument is the regular season wasn’t special because they were so good? That they keep beating everyone badly? It would’ve been more special if they lost two or three?

"LEt'S kEeP tHe rEgULaR sEaSOn SPeCiAL" What a riveting run to the title game for 2018 or Alabama (Before getting smoked by Clemson). Not ONE game was "special". CFB has always been about just having the best regular season record regardless of schedule to get the invite to the playoff. That doesn't make the regular season great - if anything it made it worse

@OS_Beaver If you want Bears, Wildcats, and Buffaloes, there’s a non-zero chance Baylor, Kansas State, and Colorado will need a new home in a few years…actually Cal and Arizona too

@slmandel No, it is what’s wrong w/ college football. All other sports are settled on the court, field, or ice….win your division or clinch a wild card, and you are in. Schedule determined by a third party, not teams pick their future opponents and voters determine postseason games…SMH.

You can go 9-8 in the NFL and play for the Super Bowl. You can go 83-79 in MLB and make the World Series. The beauty of college football is your regular season matters. It might not much longer. nytimes.com/athletic/72777…

@wilnerhotline Why are people so threatened by keeping 5 instead of reducing it to 4? If they can do it to the Pac-12, schools in the ACC & Big 12 are next. It’s already going in that direction.

@APH00PS Frank repeatedly said “we have four tradable draft picks”. That’s where he’s going with this…he wants a major and proven piece to plug in with Kawhi and DG.

The scariest thing about the Clippers’ dream scenario (getting 4th via Kawhi trade, getting 5th from Indiana) is the young core we draft winding up like the ones in Houston and Orlando. They cool, but you know you can’t win anything significant with them.

@CF_Budge It all depends on what the PAC12 does on the field. If they upset a few big names, send their champion to the playoff this year and next, maybe even win a game in the CFP, then, yeah, teams will want to join them. That is an “if”, though.

@jasonkredline They will structure it so the top two teams don’t play each other that weekend, so there’s no situation where teams in the championship game are playing for the third time of the year. Next year it won’t be an issue, because they will have two more teams.

Seeing people talk themselves into this round robin, flex scheduling thing the pac 12 is doing is going to be interesting. Don’t think they had any other options really, and obviously it’s not something they’re going to want to do forever so not a massive deal, But it’s dumb.
