This evening: @DAGToddBlanche and I are announcing an 11 count indictment against the Southen Poverty Law Center. Charges include wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering. The SPLC allegedly engaged in a massive fraud operation to deceive their donors, enrich themselves, and hide their deceptive operations from the public. They lied to their donors, vowing to dismantle violent extremist groups, and actually turned around and paid the leaders of these very extremist groups - even utilizing the funds to have these groups facilitate the commission of state and federal crimes. That is illegal – and this is an ongoing investigation against all individuals involved.

America needs reform — again. We needed it after the Civil War. We needed it during the Great Depression. Eighty years later, we need it now. Two failures are breaking the system. First: gerrymandering. Out of 435 House seats, only about 22 are truly competitive. That’s not democracy, that’s incumbency protection. Second: Citizens United. Since 2010, unlimited money has created a separate-but-equal democracy where big business, big pharma, big banks, and tax cuts for the wealthy dominate the agenda. If you made $50K, you lost benefits. If you made $1M, you got a tax break. The real question isn’t whether reform is needed — it’s whether politicians can explain it, and whether voters are ready to break the sclerosis and start thinking in 10, 15, 20-year plans again.
