@redrumlisa My nana, a single mum, who spent her entire life working retail is 89 years old. She lives in subsidized senior housing and for the first time in her life has enough money to feel comfortable. It took her 80 years to finally have enough money where she can live comfortably.

And the State pension was always designed to only give the working class a year or two at most & I think this is the crux to the middle class Millenial & Gen Zers anger over pensions they dont think the working class deserve a decent life. Nothing new they never did. Their anger is deindustrialisation has allowed the working class a few extra years

In the most deprived parts of Glasgow & Dundee @theSNP strongholds life expectancy is below pension age - Males in the 20% most deprived areas have life expectancy around 67.8 years - Specific deprived neighborhoods historically show figures as low as the mid-60s (e.g., areas like Greater Govan or parts of the east end) - The intra-city gap can exceed 15 years between the most and least deprived neighborhoods (e.g., ~65-68 years in poorest vs. 80+ in affluent ones like Pollokshields West). Imagine the pension age is higher than life expectancy already in SNP voting areas.

@redrumlisa @drgerke1 Those arguing for some sort of means testing and setting arbitrary parameters to determine who is worthy of a pension and who isn’t are frightening. Everyone pays into the system!

@drgerke1 Now do you see why I'm pushing back on this you need to understand what happens when you allow even an inch of removal of social benefits- look what happened to council housing or student fees - once the seal is broke its a free for all.

Totally disagree - it’s good that we spend a large chunk of tax revenue on pensions, because everybody deserves dignity later in life and only a minuscule proportion of people could ever save enough to fund themselves post-work. I want to be able to retire!
Joe Reeve - 🇬🇧/acc@isnit0

PSA: Pensioner Spending is the single largest line item here - *£160bn*. More than half of all benefit spending. More than NHS England, or all NHS Providers. Want to pay less tax? Reduce the benefits we give to people who’ve had an entire life to prepare and save.

@redrumlisa My dad passed 8 months before he was to receive his first state pension. He was a retired automotive worker and shop steward and fought hard to keep the pension he as never to collect himself.

@it_is_fareed @redrumlisa But wasn’t this to be expected with an ageing population? I’m not sure why the cost of supporting elderly people is breaking news?

This divisive & very nasty 'boomer' narrative by younger people is definitely being pushed by the younger middle class generation who feel entitled by their class but realise the disadvantage of their generation. Its not working class young people pushing this because they dont have parents & grandparents with the wealth the middle class see in their families

@redrumlisa I find it interesting how the response from the generation who has had the mistaken away from it by the boomer class responds in kind by wanting to take away what the boomer class has. It’s a typically short sighted and spiteful ‘gotcha’ approach.

This is becoming typical now of the prejudices & bigotry & misinformation towards older people through the 'boomer' rhetoric & is very worrying. Young people wanting to get rid of pensions with no understanding that removing benefits means you wont get them back when you need them. More worrying though we have assisted dying & this generation is in control of that.

Meanwhile, even the slightest gesture towards reducing the generous state benefits available to over-65s - a cohort that mostly attended university for free, by the way - is politically toxic enough to almost collapse a government. Why does this country hate young people so much?

@AmazingZoltan They were indeed very different--and I've no doubt that 20 something year old me would immediately jump ship if they were today's party back then. I was young and naive, not stupid and insane.

@yuanyi_z The British legion is fantastic. My Father in law never received his medal from his service in Yemen. I reached out to the legion, provided the information they needed and was sent one within 3 weeks.

Late night talk shows are a sign that a culture thinks critically about its government and, more importantly, how we think about what we think. It would allow us to become less serious about ourselves, also sorely needed. This gets us away from having news be our only source of national conversations.

@PaolaQP1231 I haven’t stepped foot in a Tim Horton’s in over 6 years. I refuse to give my hard earned money to corporate slop. At least my local Starbucks employs local youth and has reasonably good coffee.

My 2 rescue dogs in their Sunday best today. Hank and Chance. Wouldn’t it be cool if everybody who had a rescue shared them in this thread to show the world that rescue dogs are the best option. Shelters and rescues all around the world full of great dogs. Go for it👇

@redrumlisa People who would (rightly) argue against the closure of automotive factories as an example, are openly calling for and supporting the elimination of thousands of public service jobs, and it perplexes me how they rationalize one as bad but the other as good.

Over the last week my timeline has been awash with a lot of nastiness & some abuse but also lots of support for my work around class. I wrote this chapter for a book about European Class Inequality. I argue that class inequality is Britain is hidden & cloaked & misrepresented. I accused the Greens of this. @redrumlisa And arrogance towards those people losing their jobs by mainly other white collar, middle class workers. It baffles me why anyone would be celebrating the loss of jobs and 40,000 lost jobs has an impact across the spectrum. Why would middle and lower class workers celebrate the
