Consider the skyrocketing rents that are pricing native Irish families out of their own communities, forcing many to emigrate in search of affordable housing. Consider how mass migration has transformed once familiar Irish neighborhoods, making them barely recognizable to those who grew up there. Consider the heightened risks of sexual violence that young Irish women now face. And consider the courage of Irish patriots like school teacher Enoch Burke, who stand firm in their principles and would rather face imprisonment than compromise to appease the political left. St. Patrick’s Day is a time for joy and celebration, but it should also be a day for Irish Americans to reconnect with our roots and show solidarity with the people of Ireland in their challenges.
