I wish to express my unequivocal support for the recent and decisive actions taken by the United States Government to revoke visas issued to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Speaker of the House of the People, members of the Council of Ministers, and key individuals within the inner circle of Villa Somalia. This action represents a firm and necessary stand against systemic corruption, abuse of office, and the continued erosion of constitutional governance in Somalia. It sends a clear message that individuals who exploit state institutions, defraud U.S. taxpayers, and undermine democratic order will face real consequences. Over recent years, Somalia has witnessed grave violations, including the unlawful amendment of the Provisional Constitution, the forced displacement of internally displaced persons, and the overthrow of legitimate federal member state authorities - particularly in South West State - through the misuse of elite forces and externally supported military capabilities. In light of these serious concerns, I respectfully call upon Secretary of the Treasury Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent to expand upon these measures by imposing targeted financial sanctions. Specifically, I urge that the list of high-ranking officials of the executive branch of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which I have formally submitted to the Office of the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence (TFI), be fully considered and incorporated into sanctions designations. These individuals and associated entities are credibly implicated in: - Defrauding U.S. taxpayer-funded programs and assistance   - Large-scale corruption and embezzlement of public funds   - The systematic misuse and diversion of international aid   - Abuses of power that undermine governance, stability, and rule of law   The inclusion of these individuals and entities in targeted sanctions - particularly through asset freezes and financial restrictions - would represent a critical step toward accountability and deterrence. I also wish to extend my sincere appreciation to the leadership and staff of the U.S. Embassy in Somalia, the Somalia Desk, and the Bureau of African Affairs for their continued diligence, professionalism, and commitment to transparency and principled engagement. With the Speaker’s term set to conclude on April 14, 2026, and the President’s term ending on May 15, 2026, Somalia stands at a defining moment. Continued U.S. leadership in promoting accountability and upholding the rule of law will be essential in shaping a more stable and just future. I hope EU, UK, Canada and countries who believe in rule of laws will follow the bold decision made by President Trump and Secretary Rubio and REVOKE these individuals visa urgently to show solidarity with Somali people. The militias that were reportedly taking orders from Abdiaziz Laftagareen and carried out the attack against the Somali National Armed Forces are now surrendering in groups, along with the military vehicles they were using. Reports from the battlefield indicate that many militias are defecting and surrendering to the Somali National Armed Forces. Military officials have warmly received those who surrendered, and medical assistance has been provided to some of the injured militias, who are currently being treated at military medical facilities. The Somali National Armed Forces remain in control of most of the areas from which the militias launched their attack, and they continue efforts to secure the area.
