🇺🇸 Most Badass Celebrities: Combat Veterans Edition #6 James Arness James Arness, famous for playing Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke, is a World War II combat veteran who earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Born James King Aurness in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1923, he stood six feet seven and a half inches tall. He wanted to fly fighters for the Navy but his height kept him out of the cockpit. The Army drafted him in March 1943. He trained as a rifleman and went overseas with the 3rd Infantry Division. On January 22, 1944, he landed on the Anzio beachhead in Italy as part of the Allied invasion. Because of his height, he was ordered to be the first man off the landing craft to test the water depth. Just days later, during brutal fighting in the Battle of Anzio, Arness and his squad were caught in an intense firefight in a vineyard. German machine gun fire ripped into his right leg, shattering his tibia. He was severely wounded, treated on the spot by a medic, and medically evacuated. After multiple surgeries and a long recovery in hospitals in Italy and the United States, Corporal James Arness was honorably discharged on January 29, 1945. For his bravery under fire he earned the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, along with the Combat Infantryman Badge and campaign medals with battle stars and arrowhead device. The wound left him with a permanent limp and chronic leg pain that stayed with him for the rest of his life. It even flared up during demanding horseback scenes on Gunsmoke. Despite the injury, James Arness went on to become one of television’s most beloved and enduring stars, embodying the strong, stoic lawman for 20 seasons and millions of viewers. He said it best himself: “I was honored to have served in the Army for my country. I was at Anzio during WWII, and it makes you realize how very precious life is.” Thank you, Corporal! 🫡🇺🇸
