@jakozloski This is just the same error as the "life expectancy = healthcare" people make. Insane people, drug addicts, gang members, prisoners, etc. are all likely to be unmarried. Until you can pull those people out, the stat is useless.

The data on marriage and life outcomes is consistent and not subtle. Married people live longer, earn more, accumulate more wealth, report higher life satisfaction, have lower rates of depression and substance abuse, and produce children who outperform on every measurable dimension. The cultural narrative that marriage is one lifestyle option among equally valid alternatives isn't supported by any longitudinal research. It's a story people tell themselves to feel okay about not getting there.

Yup. Pretty easy to see how the midterm goes if you're willing to accept that Democrats aren't as smart as the Iglesiases and Hananias claim they are. Distracted by House redistricting and protecting Ossoff in Georgia, Democrats fumble both Michigan and New Hampshire. Maine never ends up competitive. Bam. +2 for Republicans on net as we await the results of the GA runoff and NC recount. Not what Chuck Schumer expected. But then does anything turnout like he'd hope?

@RichardHanania I think I'd like to live in a society where the profit motive is not a factor in education and healthcare. Happy to see it in most other places. As someone who works in education, privitisation of various things (mainly recruitment and catering) has been ruinous.

Sweden is choosing capitalism. Social spending as percentage of GDP is now 24%, lower than most of Northern Europe. Sweden has surpassed the US in billionaires per capita. School choice is universal, one in ten teens goes to a school operated by a company listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. Taxes have been cut three years in a row. Sweden has seen "more than 500 initial public offerings over the 10 years through 2024, more than Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain combined" Nearly half of primary healthcare clinics are now privately owned. The result? Same as always. Sweden is projected to grow 2% a year through 2030, which is the same as the US and double France and Germany. How many times does this have to keep happening across the world? How many times does free market capitalism have to prove itself superior to socialism before the world accepts the truth?

Swish top 5 guys to watch in The National (2025-26 regular season) #1 Quinn Hughes. Filth edge work. #2 Sid. Something about Sid man. Before he got hurt. He was still so nasty at 38 years stung. The Goat. #3 Jack Hughes aka Jizzy. So Swaggy. Twinkle toeing. I think he can score 50 on multiple occasions with the right supporting staff of players. #4 Martin Necas. Kinda plays like a way better prime Ales Hemsky. Hemmer was juice too. I like artists. Necas is a painter. He sees the mural before it happens. #5 Matthew Schaefer. Pretty crazy an 18 year old can change the entire direction and feel of an organization and fanbase. Dude is a straight up vibe. Life is about energy. This kid oozes confidence. Confidence is the soil to energy. 23 tucks as a 18 yo. lol. Electric. -People’s

My first degree was a masters in maths. My second was a masters in education. The difference is night and day. The education degree is a joke. The only challenging aspect is thinking which thoughts and ideas you need to hold back on to not upset the clearly leftist ""'professor""". You don't learn anything useful. You just learn to adopt and use educational lingo: saying nice-sounding cliches that have zero substance to them.
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil

Teachers average among the least intelligent university graduates. Little of what they 'learn' is even relevant to what they end up doing. In a given year, the lowest-scoring groups on the GRE, SAT, and ACT are usually those pursuing degrees in education.

I'm a lot more open to the possibility of aliens than many people here, but the idea that anything related to aliens or UFOs could have "Bible-changing" implications is totally ridiculous. There is no reason why it should shake anyone's faith to find out that God created other lifeforms on other planets out there in the vast cosmos. There are like a hundred billion galaxies. My faith does not demand that I assume they're all completely empty.

He's been caught on camera masturbating in the building's hallways. He threatens his neighbors with axes. A few weeks ago, he opened all the burners on his stove and tried to set the building on fire. He's still living there and the neighbors are terrified. The landlord can't throw him out because of New York's tenant protections. When the police arrest him, he's immediately released on his own recognizance and goes right back to the building. The prosecutors in the Bronx and the mayor of New York are deeply committed to keeping people like this out of prison. There are a million laws and rules and institutions protecting him, and none protecting you from him.
Collin Rugg@CollinRugg

NEW: Hatchet-wielding, cross-dressing, m*sterbating, New Yorker caught on camera terrorizing people in a Bronx apartment building. The thong-wearing freak has been identified as 28-year-old Anthony Orozco. Neighbors say they are terrified to go in the hallways where Orozco will walk around with no clothes on, touching himself. He is also accused of turning on all his stove burners in this apartment so that gas filled the apartment. The fire department came out and cut off the gas, meaning the entire building had to live without gas for a month. Orozco hasn't paid for rent in over a year, but gets to live for free, thanks to the fact that the housing court has not issued an eviction warrant, according to the New York Post.

@citchmook 11 out of the last 20 years have been the points leader (including the famous Erik Karlsson 101 pt / -26 season), 4 times they were second place, 5 times were not. That argument does not stand up to scrutiny. Do it over 40 years, it's the same story.

The hypocrisy of this award is on full display on two fronts: 1. If it's a point scoring award (which is basically has been for the past 20 years), not including Bouchard here is a massive snub. In that timeframe the points leader won 11 times, second won it 4 times, and the remaining times (V. Hedman (5th), D. Doughty (9th), D. Keith (6th), Z. Chára (12th), N. Lidström (5th)) closed out the remainder. I haven't checked but I would bet the leader was a finalist in all those cases. 2. If in fact it's a defensive award now, not including Moritz Seider is a snub of epic proportions. He is far and away the best defensive defenseman in the league. One has to question how the conclusions of the voters were drawn, it's not a bad list, but I'm not sure I can call it fair when the guy that led all of these guys by 14 points isn't even a finalist.

In the main white kids in poverty tend to outperform black kids not in poverty, so seems to me race does matter a lot.
Kmele 🖐@kmele

He's halfway there. But what accounts for the disparity @NickKristof highlights? It's family structure, curricula, various other policy choices... and all impacting the lives of PARTICULAR children. When you sort the same test results by income rather than race, a comparable disparity emerges, and it points more directly at practical remedies. If we stop obsessing over race, we see the problems/solutions more clearly.

Despite his structural disadvantages Lee opted to attempt to invade the Union twice and both attempts failed spectacularly and deprived him of resources and manpower. His strategy should have been more defensive, force the Union to attack fortified positions. Built a fortress. THAT might have worn down the Union's political will, where his brash offensive operations only strengthened it.
Bushwhacker@anglotradboy

You’re assuming that Lee had the luxury of excess manpower and supplies to strategize across multiple theaters. He didn’t. Grant did. And that Lee had that luxury, the strategic situation improved greatly. See Battle of Chickamauga. And I’m not even going to dignify a response to the claim that the union army was overstretched and exhausted
