My first book chapter/publication is out! This work is part of my PhD research on the datafication of assessment and learning. You can read it here: doi.org/10.4324/978100… Chapter 8: Students' experiences of overt data-talk in the classroom: "It's all just this stupid system"

@digiteracy NLP algo's can encode associative definitions (conditions) to words, but depend on semantic precision of words (primary limitation). My MEd Thesis finds; If words used to describe things are imprecise, so is algo'. 'Algo' Equity' possible, but needs precision definitions (hard).

I've been reading about fairness and algorithms. Not sure if I'm missing something obvious, but it seems that algorithms can't be embedded with robust notions of fairness, esp if fairness is contextual. Can algorithmic decision-making be fair in terms of equity? I'm stuck. #AI

When we write anything even vaguely academic, we kill ourselves citationing the fuck out of everything, while 18th/19th century dudes were just there publishing five volumes of ‘Here are some Thoughts I had in the Bath’.

@mariejbeech @meredithdclark Might consider the term 'prisoner of war' (POW), think it to be even more accurate and a term I prefer as it encompasses the full spectrum of the experience in the realistic perspective. Also acknowledges fact of being warred upon even if POW themselves aren't aware of it.

I started saying “enslaved people” instead of “slaves,” and you should consider making this change too. Slave is an identity; it says, “This is who they are.” Enslaved is a circumstance; it says, “This is what was done to them.” The language we use matters.
