We know what a Roman soldier stationed in Britain wanted for his birthday. We know a Sumerian merchant named Ea-nasir sold substandard copper and his customers complained in writing. We know so much about 4000 years of ordinary people, recovered one fragment at a time, because of archaeology. It matters because the past ran every experiment we're afraid to run. And we can learn from it. That's the field. It's important, and it deserves more credit than it gets.
