Sen. Fetterman has missed 30 votes this year, and hardly appeared in his own state. But he made time to go on a first-class, all-expenses paid trip to Israel where he had briefings & BBQs with the IDF — all on the dime of an NYC non-profit. @theintercept rb.gy/g5tdqg

The death of a Nigerian content moderator in Kenya earlier this year was not an isolated case. We found that TikTok workers are trapped in Kenya with no legal status, facing police harassment and terrible conditions. It's all a "falsehood" one worker told us. W/ @vincentoowino

Many foreign content moderators say they spend long hours reviewing disturbing videos while waiting for work permits that never arrive. They cannot travel home and their undocumented status leaves them vulnerable to police harassment. zurl.co/3oqdG

This comes after the Kenyan government claimed it would take UK army abuses seriously last year — and while the British soldier who raped and murdered a Kenayn woman over over a decade ago still roams free. occrp.org/en/news/kenyan…

Since July 2022, 35 British soldiers in Kenya have paid for sex, according to a new inquiry I just obtained. It is likely much higher: 238 soldiers said they knew someone in the army who paid for transactional sex. The report considered "gating" British soldiers in to stop them.

30,000 young people, mostly Americans, are traveling to Israel for free this summer, funded by Birthright, an $85 million nonprofit. Last year, as Israel bombed Gaza, the trip included wineries, yoga & beaches — accompanied by IDF soldiers. @theintercept rb.gy/9st26c

Other activities included a seminar on Israel advocacy, where armed settlers in the West Bank were referred to as “local volunteers” for Israel. At the end of the trip participants said “they gained a lot more respect for IDF soldiers" and Israel seemed "safer than the U.S."

“The last thing on my mind is guarantees for the Palestinian people in terms of their security,” an American trip leader told a cohort from the U.S. last summer. “I don’t care right now. I really don’t give a shit.”

I’m a content moderator at Teleperformance Kenya, and I need to speak out about the reality of our work. The post about Ladi’s tragic death (@C_NyaKundiH) misses the truth: working here is brutal, especially for Kenyans like us. Let me explain our side.
Cyprian, Is Nyakundi@C_NyaKundiH

Tragic Death of Content Moderator in Nairobi Sparks Workplace Welfare Discussions The passing of a Nigerian expatriate working for Teleperformance Kenya has reignited discussions on employee welfare in the content moderation industry. The deceased, identified as a content moderator, reportedly fell ill in late February, was granted sick leave, and later missed work before being found unresponsive at her residence. Teleperformance has reached out to the deceased's family and is working with authorities in the ongoing investigation. A colleague who worked closely with the deceased shared a note, stating, "Content moderation is not an easy job, Cyprian. Even for myself, I don’t plan to stay here for more than two years, I’m saving to start my own business or maybe get another better job. That said, Teleperformance is a great company to work for, better than my previous employer who didn't pay us any close to what I earn today. As for Ladi, she got unwell due to a personal matter she didn’t want to disclose to other colleagues. It’s unfortunate that some are using this case to jeopardize our jobs and opportunities." Teleperformance reaffirmed its commitment to employee wellness, highlighting its 24/7 counselling services, wellness breaks, and a counselor-to-moderator ratio of 1:38, surpassing the industry average of 1:75. The company, recently named among Fortune’s Top 5 Best Workplaces, also noted its competitive salaries, four to five times Kenya’s statutory minimum wage. While the content moderation industry faces ongoing discussions over mental health concerns, Teleperformance maintains that its wellness programmes exceed industry standards. Some labour advocates argue for stronger protections, but discussions continue on how best to support workers in this field. The incident has sparked wider conversations about the pressures faced by content moderators, with some questioning the effectiveness of workplace wellness programmes across the sector. The balance between job demands and mental health remains a key issue in discussions about industry conditions. Investigations are ongoing, as authorities wait to see if the family of the deceased will consent to the release of postmortem results issued by the police yesterday. Colleagues of the deceased are paying their last respects at a memorial held this evening.

Repeatedly harassed and chased off their land, farmers in Wadi Al-Rakhim were finally able to reap their crops last Friday — but only by sheer luck.

The wheat harvest in the West Bank is becoming the most dangerous yet. Settlers, some dressed in army clothes with assault rifles, descended on private Palestinian land in Masafer Yatta on Friday. The attacks are daily. Photos by me w/ @DiklaTaylor @972mag rb.gy/xv9oho

Israel's takeover of the Jordan Valley is nearly complete. In the last 2 years, 100,000 dunams of land (25,000 acres) have been emptied of Palestinian communities. Now Trump's greenlight has pushed the violence even further. Latest w/ @DiklaTaylor @972mag rb.gy/m2rr1p

In community halls in Kawangware, Derrick Sajir ran lessons on sex ed, family planning, & gender-based violence, earning 750 Kenyan shillings a session ($5.80). He estimates that he has worked with thousands of young women in the area. Now, he is struggling to survive himself.

Every woman in Kawangware knows Janet Mukabwa. For mothers, some as young as 13, she is a mentor, and a crucial lifeline. Now, she can no longer provide referrals that helped to connect women with free health checks, access to drug rehabilitation programs & work opportunities.

NEW: In Kenya, HIV among women & girls is expected to spike following USAID cuts. In the slums of Kawangware, bursaries for girls to attend school, access to healthcare and reproductive education is now gone. Communities are already struggling to survive. moretoherstory.com/stories/in-a-k…
