Today’s Senate Committee on Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security meeting brought an important step forward on HB 108.
After strong discussion and a last-minute opportunity for VFW Department of Georgia to speak, a new amendment was added that aligns the bill with federal law requiring accreditation.
State Commander Bill Miles and Chief of Staff Dwayne Kilbourne break down what happened, where the bill stands, and why this change better protects veterans from predatory actors.
With only three legislative session days remaining, the full Senate could take this up next. We are staying alert and engaged.

⚠️ URGENT: HB 108 BACK ON THE TABLE ⚠️
The Georgia Senate Committee on Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security meets TOMORROW (3/24) at 4PM to discuss an amended Georgia HB 108.
We’re hearing penalties may be added, but accreditation is STILL being ignored.
That’s a problem.
Federal law mandates accreditation, and courts are already striking down laws that don’t comply (see Louisiana’s overturned PLUS Act).
Georgia must get this right.

We have filed our brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit challenging U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs rules that deny veterans the full education benefits they earned.
In Rudisill v. McDonough (2024), the Supreme Court of the United States made it clear that veterans who qualify for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill may receive up to 48 months of combined education benefits. However, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has issued rules adding restrictions Congress never intended, including requiring a break in service before accessing the full benefits.
That is not what the law says, and it is not what veterans earned. Veterans kept their promise to serve. Now it is time for our nation to Honor the Contract.
