@spuffyologies What are you on about? Sunnydale was built on top of an already collapsed Sunnydale… (the Masters lair an underground swallowed by an “earthquake” the prosperpexa Willow raises in the s6 finale… the Chumash tribe area Xander falls into … it would be the same.

there's no way people who claim to genuinely love buffy think that reboot premise was good when it literally erased the final season of buffy's story & takes away btvs' rewatch value like come on. the nostalgia can't be worth all that

@Variety Her name being “Nova” should have been scrapped on the page. The name “Buffy” served as an unexpectedly cute headline of innocence and humor above the dark horror and violence of vampire slaying, it served a purpose. Reading “Nova” just sounds like cringe inducing fan fiction.

EXCLUSIVE: The shooting draft for the scrapped “Buffy” reboot at Hulu reveals the plot: Over the course of the script, Nova (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), described as a “brainy introvert,” discovers that she’s the Slayer — and people in Sunnydale do know the mythology of what Slayers are because of what happened to the town back in Buffy’s day. Set during a “Vampire Weekend,” a Renaissance Faire-like celebration of the town’s dubious history, Nova takes down two actual vampires after coming into her powers. By the episode’s end, the formerly friendless Nova has a new Scooby Gang flanking her. The action then cuts to New York City for a brief scene with Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, who is working in a corporate office building under the name "Anne." The script drops hints about what’s to come: Her dad, a photojournalist, is overly protective, and has moved them around a lot after Nova was kidnapped as a young child. And all the vampires that Buffy buried in the show’s 2003 series finale, when the Hellmouth collapsed in on itself, taking Sunnydale down with it, have been awakened. Nova would have her work cut out for her. variety.com/2026/tv/news/b…

Why yall keep saying that she thought she was in New Mexico? She clearly says Mexico City here. It might have slipped her tongue during the show, but she knows where she is...I agree with the critiques for the stage and the duration but let's not take it too far

@FreddyInSpace Pilots aren’t a finished product they’re there for the purpose of learning & finding what needs to be improved, that’s the point. If the script was crap they wouldn’t have ordered a pilot, they keep back peddling and making excuses. Only person whose being honest is Sarah so far

We'll clearly be conspiracy theorizing about the failure of Buffy reboot for many years but the very likely reality is they made a not-great pilot (happens all the time) and it wasn't worth spending & taking forever to try to salvage it. Not uncommon. Rarely this high profile.

NOPE. We are not about to pit two women against each other and make Hulu look like the good guy and Sarah Michelle Gellar look like the villain. Chloé Zhao and Sarah have worked on this Buffy sequel for years. This is beneath you, John. Doing Hulu’s damage control. #Buffy
John Rocha@TheRochaSays

Ok. FUCK THIS. Sarah Michelle Gellar's people and maybe even HULU are trying to throw Chloe Zhao under the bus over Buffy. Nope. Not letting this happen to an INCREDIBLY TALENTED woman of color. I was gonna stay quiet with the other stuff I'd heard, but nah. Let's do this. Since my post 48 hours ago, I've had sources tell me that: - Gellar was the issue from the beginning - this was just an "IP grab" to stop that SLAYERS project from proceeding (which my sources had heard from a person involved with the original series) - Gellar wasn't terribly interested in rebooting the series (which was why her role was very limited, but was going to be more than one line) - Gellar had intentionally courted a creative who had a mixed history as a showrunner, but was a known“fan,” so that it would easily fall on her as the reason for the series’ failure. - that there was "a lot of love bombing from SMG to Chloe Zhao" before this latest excuse was put out there blaming Zhao and throwing her under the bus - Gellar constantly shouted down or cut off execs and production people who were trying to fix the issues with the show - One even said that what Gellar wanted to make changes to the Buffy character and the established canon of the series that would "piss off 90% of the fanbase" And now it just came out from @THR that Gellar doesn't want you reading the script that is being leaked. No surprise. It would show all the mistakes she approved of that were going to wreck the show and the canon. Btw these are sources I trust and who have given me correct info in the past. Some of y'all might have to put down your rose colored fan glasses and put on some clear ones.

Hulu is upset that Sarah Michelle Gellar told the truth that Hulu put an executive in charge of the reboot that admitted he didn't like Buffy. Now they have their "sources" coming to Variety trying to make Sarah and Chloe Zhao the problem. No one is falling for that. #Buffy

@Variety Horrible hit piece you must thing were all really dumb to believe Chloé wasn’t capable of directing this successfully. If the script was the issue why did they order a pilot from it and throw money at it. HULU & Disney stop throwing people under the bus and take responsibility.

EXCLUSIVE: Inside Chloé Zhao’s failed "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot: - Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return was shockingly minimal, with Buffy reduced to just one line in the pilot as the story centered on a new teen Slayer. - Sources say the project, which Zhao directed, was viewed as not mainstream enough and skewing too young, while Gellar has since blamed a Hulu executive who “was proud” he never watched the original series. - After multiple rewrites, the revival was ultimately deemed “unsalvageable” and scrapped. variety.com/2026/tv/news/b…

It’s a shame Buffy will just live on a shelf now for a long time probably. No WAY is Disney going to let the IP go for someone else to pick up this iteration. Feels like a window in time where SMG still makes sense to return as a legacy and the anticipation was so high. Damn.

Watching the internet reaction to this stuff is really interesting. So many people are like “the script sucked!” Maybe (I didn’t read it and have no opinion) but Hulu picked it up and shot it. If the problem was the script why wouldn’t they address it before throwing millions of dollars at it?

Inside baseball. Feature filmmaking is about nuance and decisions. Television "coverage" is about the ability of the producers who second guess you being able to re-cut the entire thing in post. For this clickbait headline to undercut Zhao's ability is ridiculous.
Variety@Variety

EXCLUSIVE: Sources say Chloé Zhao ultimately proved a mismatch for the “Buffy” reboot, with the pilot reportedly undershot and lacking coverage, requiring reshoots. Her filmmaking style, while acclaimed, didn’t translate to a dialogue-heavy TV pilot, and the new cast’s performances were said to be under-directed, making it difficult for the characters to land. variety.com/2026/tv/news/b…
