After 8 years of being full time self-employed I’ve got one more month of savings left before I need to quit content creation full time. My income has taken a huge downturn, mainly due to brand activations. Have brands been spending way less recently or have I been wildly unlucky?

There are 120,000 concurrent viewers watching a collegiate Overwatch esports event on Twitch. Take a look around and look at the viewership for other esports events on Twitch right now. That's interesting data.

@roaldvanbuuren It also created cross pollination between the games. I might have come for Smash or StarCraft 2 but I sure would stop and watch hype moments in other games. The larger games also pulled up the newer titles. Worked the same way in streaming too, with most finals not overlapping.

Does esports need a new game to save it? The last real boom came from LoL, DOTA2, CS:GO and SC2 starting in the late 2000s, then PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Valorant and a few others gave the industry another push to sustain upwards momentum. But right now it feels like we’re stuck. The same titles are still here, but they’re not driving new growth. Viewership has slowed, storylines are stale, and publishers, TOs, brands and other stakeholders are struggling to make the economics work. For over a decade, the industry has relied on new games to reset the cycle, to bring fresh players, new narratives and new energy. But that’s also the problem because it means the health of esports is tied to whether the next “big one” arrives. And what if it doesn’t? Maybe the question isn’t “what’s the next game,” but “how do we build an ecosystem that doesn’t collapse when there isn’t one?” Thoughts?

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has issued a lifetime ban to Maurizio “MAUschine” Weber following an on-stage assault at the CAGGTUS LEIPZIG Event. The incident, widely circulated and clearly documented, involved physical violence against another participant in a live event environment; representing one of the most severe breaches of the ESIC Code of Conduct. The sanction prohibits Mr Weber from participating in any capacity across all ESIC Member events globally. This matter underscores ESIC’s zero-tolerance position on violence and its commitment to protecting player safety and competitive integrity across all Member events. 🚨Ludwig has spoken out about the backlash over his Street Fighter 6 exhibition against Tyler1 🚨 "I agreed to this because I, in general, like doing content with Tyler," he said. "I think it'd be fun." "I was always planning to go to Evo, regardless. I'm not going to Evo just for a paid opportunity just to do Street Fighter. I'm actually going to Evo because Rivals of Aether II is at Evo." Ludwig's company, Offbrand Games, published Rivals of Aether II, a platform fighting game similar to Melee. Ludwig has been involved in the Smash scene for many years and was integral in bringing it into the mainstream. For him, the opportunity to get his game on Evo's Sunday night main stage is the bigger priority - so much so, that he's even planning on paying for players' registration at the event. "We're at Evo, and we have the ability to be on the main stage at Evo. That would be the first platform fighter to do it since they cut Smash." He also revealed that he has gotten to Platinum in Street Fighter 6 and Tyler is currently at Master rank in the game.

Gen.G Arnold
Gen.G Arnold@arnoldwh·
In the eight years I’ve worked in gaming, one thing always stood out: so many young people with a genuine passion for gaming and zero clue what to do with it professionally. According to our internal survey data at Gen.G, 2 out of 3 high schoolers who game say they’re interested in exploring careers in gaming. By the time they graduate college, less than 1% will have taken a single class dedicated to it. That gap shouldn’t exist. Gaming is now a $224B industry, bigger than film and music combined. It’s not niche. It hasn’t been for a while. And yet there’s almost no real education pipeline to match it. What little does exist skews heavily toward game design and development. Real skills, real jobs, but a small slice of what the industry actually needs. Think about it like food. We don’t only need chefs. We need the people running operations, marketing, finance, partnerships, media. Gaming is the same. Most of the jobs look nothing like making a game. Esports, for instance, is <1% of the available jobs within a gaming company. So we built something for high schoolers who are serious about this. @GenG partnered with @ASU at their new Downtown Los Angeles campus to create a one-month program taught by people actually working in the industry. How games make money, the marketing of games, how AI is changing the industry, content creation, sponsorship, operations. Sessions run in June, July, and August. We've also worked really hard to have scholarship options based on merit so that anyone that deserves to go, will be able to go. If you know a high schooler who should be there: ggacademy-en.imweb.me/asusummercamp
