For years, the photo was shared with the story of a secret Soviet experiment where prisoners were kept awake for days until they went insane. The smiling, creepy face became the image everyone associated with the story. But it had nothing to do with Russia. Nothing to do with sleep deprivation. And nothing to do with a real experiment. The figure was actually a prop called “Spazm,” created in 2005. The Russian Sleep Experiment itself was a creepypasta. The nightmare face that made it feel real was just a Halloween decoration.
