🎃🍕📼 Yo Crypt Squad, VHS Splatter Ghoulies, and Leftover Pizza Power Kids! 📼🍕🎃 It’s your favorite 80s kid mutated into a nostalgic pizza-makin’, NES-thrashin’ vampire dad — Cap’n Retrovania — reporting live from the sticky back booth of the Haunted Pizzeria Clubhouse. Late-July night, but my mind is locked in totally awesome 90s October mode. Picture it: crisp air, crunchy leaves under sneakers, candy corn on the teacher’s desk, costume arguments (Power Ranger, Ninja Turtle, or Goosebumps monster), and cheap plastic masks that smell like pure chemical nightmare fuel. You dump the backpack, nuke a plate of pizza rolls until the cheese is lava, crack a Capri Sun, and plant yourself in front of the giant CRT. Fox Kids is sacred ground… Then that commercial hits like a mozzarella whip to the soul. The music crawls in. Books twitch. Shadows stretch. A mask’s eyes snap open. That deep narrator voice drops: “The master of kid suspense R.L. Stine brings your favorite books to life… On Goosebumps… premiering November 3rd on Fox Kids. Watch it with a friend.” You launch off the carpet screaming for the whole Crypt Squad. “THE BOOKS ARE ALIVE!” Every commercial break becomes holy. You reread *The Haunted Mask* under the covers with a flashlight, knowing that October 27th primetime special is about to make Carly Beth’s nightmare your living-room reality. Cooler nights, costume-store temples, friends daring each other to watch the promo again while the microwave beeps — pure sugar-fueled anticipation that something spooky is about to crawl off the page every week. A couple years later the Crypt Squad energy only gets stronger. By ’96–’97 those same masks jump to VHS: Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask and The Haunted Mask 2,the very first Goosebumps videos from Fox Video. The promos hit just as hard — Steve’s grotesque new mask, the cursed shop basement, practical-effects goo, Carly Beth’s scream — selling you the chance to own the scare forever on orange-spined plastic. You beg for the tapes, rewatch the promos till the tracking lines dance, and gather around the CRT with pizza rolls and Capri Suns, lights off, ready for the VCR click. By Halloween week those commercials and VHS promos are the unofficial anthem of the season — mixed with caramel apples, the first “Thriller” blast, and the pure knowledge that the books had escaped the page, hit the airwaves, and finally landed in your sticky hands on tape. That was 90s October (and the VHS afterglow), Crypt Dwellers. Crunchy leaves. Cheap masks. Early dark. Pizza rolls on the coffee table. And the promise that your favorite scary books were finally coming to life. Stay radical. Stay spooky. Keep those leftover slices ice-cold.
