I have a tiny story about black violence and the system. It’s 1983. I’m 26 and a new lawyer living in Santa Monica. Off I go one morning to work in my too small leased Nissan Stanza and my suit. My roommate is a weed addict and I’ve had a puff or two. My building is on the corner of a side street and a main road. I pull out of the driveway up to the stop sign/limit line. I look left for an opening in traffic. I look right. I look left again, see an opening, let my foot off the brake and look right. Oh shit. There are two black guys at the right front of the car. My bumper may or may not have touched one guy at 1-2 mph. The guy starts yelling at me. I’m asking him if he’s hurt, I try to give him my drivers license information, I watch his friend write down my plate number. The guy is not answering or limping or hopping or saying anything hurts or displaying any signs of injury at all. What he is doing is working himself up into a rage and I have zero doubt he will drag my ass through that drivers side window and kill me. So I leave. Hit and run requires an injury and he had every chance to say or show he was injured when I asked him repeatedly while he was screaming at me. I had no reason to think he was injured. Pissed off if maybe I bumped into him, or maybe not. So a week later I get a postcard to come down and talk to the Santa Monica Police. I go and tell them all about it. They decide to charge me with hit and run and I get some dweeb of a court appointed attorney who is a mousey woman with obviously no experience at doing anything. She tells me the prosecuting attorney wants to make an example of hit and run drivers. I tell the woman attorney who tries to scare me with possible sentences that I’m not taking a plea under any circumstances. I want a jury trial. So then I do a little investigating etc. and find out that not only does the “victim”, who is 21, have 12 charges since he turned 18, one of which is assault on a police officer, but he is now back in jail. (And god only knows how many sealed juvenile charges he had before 18). So I figure game over. I win. There is no way in hell they can bring the “victim” in from jail to be a credible witness and testify. WRONG. Court appointed attorney lady tells me they will go to trial without the “victim” and they will use the testimony of the friend. Now I’m super pissed. So I make court appointed attorney lady’s life hell in terms of how I want her to conduct the jury trial. She’s practically in tears. Tells me that if I don’t take a plea, she will resign because she can’t work with me. Great! I’ll do this forever. Start from scratch as many times as it takes. Lo and behold. They offer me a deal to plead to two $85 traffic tickets: failure to stop at a crosswalk and failure to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk. Obviously I take the deal. I go to the clerks office to pay and the clerk says you can’t get both tickets because one is included in the other so I only have to pay one for $85. And it STILL pisses me off 43 years later that they would go to trial against me without the testimony of the scumbag violent criminal victim to say I hit him. The friend wasn’t even in the right place to see if there was any contact between the “victim” and my car and the “victim” wasn’t moved in any way. It may have been a fake setup for hoped for money. Who knows.

That's ruled justified not too incompetent to stand trial or some black person on the jury refuses to convict. The problem is them getting off easy on all the other crimes, both violent and non-violent, leading up to a homicide eventually when that person should already be incarcerated for said previous crimes. Try to keep up.
