I am retiring this year after more than 20 years in public education. I’ve learned one truth above all others: kids need high standards, accountability, and adults willing to challenge them to become better. We are losing that in our public schools at an alarming rate in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Too often, when our teachers and coaches demand discipline, accountability, and character, they become targets simply because some people don’t get their way or others are not willing to put forth the same effort. I have seen this time and time again, especially over the last 5-6 years. If you want to see what real leadership in education looks like, take a look at Scott Clemons the Head Baseball coach at North Stanly High School in Stanly County, NC. Coaches like him don’t just build teams, they build young men of character, responsibility, and resilience. Those are the people in education we should be supporting, not running off. We should be celebrating the success of high school programs that families want to be a part of instead of tearing them down. No matter if it is a baseball team, a Debate Club or a theater program. What school systems do not understand or seem to care about is when you attack a coach who has built a bond and relationship with his players the way Scott has, you are truly affecting the children. If we are in education for the right reason and want whats best for our kids then we need to back and support our most valuble assets. When you are willing to run off the best of the best in caring for young people, public schools are in danger. @_NSBaseball, @NSHS_Comets, @StanlySchools, @Clemdawg9, @MoGreenNCDPI, @NC_Governor, @NS_BoosterClub, @langstonwertzjr

"Most people don't want to be pushed that hard. They want to be pushed to their level of comfort. You need coaches that push you outside your comfort zone because that’s how you grow and that’s how you develop self confidence and self esteem."

Joe Mazzulla, Celtics head coach, understands that when you go hard for wins you’re going to experience failure. You’re going to experience failure because even great teams lose… But championship winning teams tend to be the ones that stick to their systems and their processes in order to retain a sense of consistency - a consistency of culture (what we say and what we do) and environment (the feeling around here)… Great teams win… Great teams lose… Championship teams stay consistent… Of course, there’s nuance to consistency. Systems and processes need to be tweaked and tested regularly. Not wholesale changes…not major surgery…just minor adaptations and mini experiments here and there. Tweaks depend on factors such as player availability; upcoming opposition; time of the season; current form; efficacy of approach; new players; new staff; the evocation of new ideas…to name a few! Championship winning teams stay calm as they go through great times and as they experience tough moments. With few ripples at the surface, they’re consistent. But deep inside the machinery, under the surface, different tools are being used to keep the engines running smoothly. A final thought… Let’s reverse Coach Mazzulla’s philosophy - we go hard for wins and refuse to accept losses. We can hate to lose. We can be furious about losing. Jeez, we can be gutted about losing and take losses personally (I know I do!) But if losses render devastation then the organisation becomes lost amidst the noise of that devastation. Low mood grips. A depressive cloud envelopes the organisation. Panic ensues. Bad decisions are made. Anxiety rifles through coaches, staff, and players. And that’s how teams and sporting organisations sink… Go again Go again Go again …and go again! 𝐌𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞. If you are a head ball coach, this is gold right here! “Your culture is the worst of what you allow.” And you can’t escape it.

Talent isn’t what separates good teams from great ones. It always comes down to the how. - How you respond. - How you handle adversity. - How you do things every day.
