@mfjlewis I once came across a report detailing how the SSPX was comparable to a cult, which included those factors you mentioned.

@Gigantals I don't see much distance between them and virtually any fundamentalist Christian cult. At least in terms of social pressure, spiritual abuse, secrecy, and exclusivity.

Why are SSPX followers so untroubled by their own excommunications? A Catholic raised inside the Society points to three forces: isolation from the outside world, contempt for the “Novus Ordo,” and a carefully cultivated fear of hell. wherepeteris.com/raised-to-fear…

“I’ve been Catholic for 5 minutes and here is why all of you are wrong and I’m right and the most holy Catholic, maybe ever…” is the type of account I’m absolutely sick of seeing. Stop promoting these LARPers

@mfjlewis I noticed that too. After reading the claims made by Fr Ripperger against Harry Potter, I couldn't help but conclude he had either made them up, or hadn't checked his sources on the series. It's dangerous when exorcists develop cults of personality.

@Gigantals And he's really the godfather of the entire celebrity exorcist craze that's influential today. None of the guys out there today are anywhere near as smart as Martin was - Ripperger and Reehil just make up stupid stuff ad hoc it seems - and thousands of people eat it up.

After digging deeply into his claims and personal history, I am thoroughly convinced that Malachi Martin made up virtually everything he said about the Vatican and the internal workings of the Church.
Louis Massett@LouisMassett

I read Windswept House back in the late 90s. It was Traddy catnip. There was even a legend that was passed around that had who the characters in the book responded to in real life. Everyone I knew believed it, after all Malachi Martin, was the former secretary of Cardinal Bea, who was one of the most prominent Cardinals at the time in the Vatican. Martin surely knew. Martin went on the Art Bell "Coast to Coast" show and told everyone he had been shown the 3rd Secret of Fatima, but was sworn to secrecy and could not give details, but warned a coming chastisment was before us. I read his book about the Jesuits, which I found fascinating. Then I read Hostage to the Devil, it was in this book the spawned doubt in my mind about Martin. Some of the details in the book were pornographic and salacious. Something I would not expect from a well trained, "true" priest. See, many of us believed Martin was "persecuted" because he was too Traditional. But after reading "Hostage to the Devil" I thought no holy priest would write such stuff--it was obscene. Then I began to hear accounts from people I trusted about Martin. One was a Traditionalist nun, who happened to be at a dinner with Martin, and was present when he recounted an incident she had first hand experience of. This nun told me and my father that Martin's story was totally sensationalized and grossly unjust. At the party she even had to correct him in front of others because she felt he had gone way across the line. A few years later, at Christendom College, one of my professers who studied at a Jesuit College, relayed how he once asked a Jesuit priest who knew Martin, what he thought of him. This priest relayed a story that Martin personally told him. Essentially, what he relayed was that he was doing some espionage work, and the East German Stasi (secret police) were after him and he had to flee by swimming the Rhine during the winter to escape them. He essentially said this Irish man was the poster boy for blarney. He didn't merely kiss the blarney stone. He swallowed the damn thing.

@Gigantals To describe him as "progressive" or an "infiltrator" suggests that he had principles or was committed to an ideological agenda. I'd say he was a master communicator and completely self-centered. He understood the value of insider information (real or invented) and leveraged it.

@DianeKamer Some of the things they say show true ignorance of what their own hierarchy believes. I know we Catholics have problems with some laity not listening to their Bishops, but it seems almost universal with the Orthodox.

I don't think anyone is despicable, because we are all made in the image of God. But man oh man, the X Orthobros seem to come pretty darned close.

@poperespecter1 @Alex_Ortodoxie @RazorFist @C2Antiquity He said your son turned Orthodox and you are acting as though he put your address and credit card information online. Nobody knows who you or your son are, work on your fragility.. or is it just fake outrage for effect?..

@poperespecter1 They're trying to use canon law against the Church, despite rejecting the most recent Code of Canon Law? Did they also forget that the Pope approved of their suppression in 1975?

@mfjlewis I know a woman who converted to Catholicism through the SSPX, but soon left for mainstream Catholicism thanks to the creepy priest. She said she loves the Latin Mass, but even she's seeing it be associated more with schismatics and resisting the Pope, than being good.

At a time when the Tridentine Mass is so clearly associated with schism and resistance to the pope, how is "we need more of this, not less" any kind of rational response to the problem? Sure, accommodate those who are attached, but for the Church it's past time to move on.

@Gigantals @poperespecter1 That figure is probably correct accounting for all forms of abuse and corruption. Financial waste, fraud, and abuse is so rampant in the Russian Orthodox clergy. The number of poor babushkas who had their lifetime donation blown on a Bulova watch or a new jetski is obscene.

@mfjlewis If there's something I've noticed over the course of my investigation of the SSPX these last few years, it's that they don't really have any new arguments. It's the same nonsense parroted across the decades, despite some of them having been refuted as far back as the 1970s.

I'm terrible at art, but I can appreciate it. There's something about these paintings of Jesus, in the midst of His Passion, looking at the viewer with such empathy and compassion, that leaves one humbled... facebook.com/Gigantals/post…
