This is a common thought, but... Lasix produces an elevation in Total Carbon Dioxide averaging approximately 1.7mml/l for a standard 250mg IV dose. Basically, it is milkshaking and it is why for tc02 testing in North America has a higher threshold than elsewhere. tc02 buffering is correlated to distance/runtime to fatigue. The longer the race, the more important tc02/lactic acid becomes in deterimining fatigue. Higher tc02 levels provide a larger "buffering capacity," meaning the blood can neutralize more acid before the pH drops to a level that interferes with muscle contraction. From Jan 1 2021, Lasix was removed from race-day treatment of horses in graded stakes in North America. The 'jet fuel' that is seemingly making horses not run in the Kentucky Derby as fast, is most likely Lasix as they no longer have a free lactic acid buffer like they had in the past. Kentucky began standardized, pre-race milkshake testing (measuring tc02 levels) in the spring of 2005. Steriods were taken out post Big Brown in 2009 and Lasix in 2021. The three year olds are probably running as fast as they actually can over that distance at that time of the year....
