Strengthening Goa’s Climate-Resilient Future Ms. Natasha Patel, CEO, India Sanitation Coalition (ISC), submitted the Climate Resilient Coastal Cities Report – Goa (Town + State Level) in Panaji to Shri Brijesh Manerkar, Member Secretary, GSUDA & Director of Municipal Administration, Goa. Key Insights from the Report: 1️⃣ Goa’s population has reached 1.46 million, with 62% now urban, driving higher pressure on water and sanitation systems. 2️⃣ Sea levels at Mormugao are rising at 1.45 mm/year — and a 1-metre rise could impact 7% of Goa’s population and cause ₹8,100 crore in damages. 3️⃣ The state generates 253 MLD of wastewater, but only 36% is treated, allowing untreated water to enter rivers, creeks & coastal zones. 4️⃣ Urban centres produce 176 MLD of sewage, yet only 25 MLD is treated despite having a 66-MLD installed capacity — highlighting major infrastructure gaps. 5️⃣ Domestic wastewater emissions now form 36% of Goa’s total waste-sector GHG emissions, with 65% coming from urban areas. Celebrating Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October 2025 🇮🇳 — reaffirming our commitment towards a cleaner 🌿, greener 🌱, and sustainable 🌏 future.

Today, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, I inaugurated the Swachh Bharat Diwas programme organised by the Department of Urban Development & Goa State Urban Development Agency. Goa has taken big strides with all 13 ULBs ODF+, Panaji achieving Water+ & Garbage Free City status, and initiatives like Clean Coast-Clean Goa. Now, under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, our focus is on 100% waste segregation, scientific legacy waste processing, and waste-to-wealth innovations — building a cleaner and sustainable Goa. Today I told the municipal authorities that my salary will be used wherever it is needed. I have decided to give each of the city’s 54 sanitation workers ₹20,000 each from my personal contribution, to ensure good work is carried on for Goa. The event was graced by the presence of Shri Yetindra M. Maralkar, Secretary, Urban Development, Shri Brijesh Manerkar, Director, Urban Development and other officials. On this Swachh Bharat Diwas, let us reaffirm our commitment to make Goa a model of urban cleanliness and sustainability for the nation. #gandhijayanti2025
