Violence broke out when some participants moved away from the city hall, where a petition was being handed over. It is confirmed that ten vehicles have been damaged, and one building in the North End business area was partially torched. No injuries have been reported thus far, and no arrests have been made. Emergency services, including the fire department, remain on the scene. Right now, Lesotho earns about $200 million a year, around 10% of its economy. But the deal was signed in 1986, and Lesotho says it’s outdated. They now want higher royalties and better compensation. Talks are expected to begin in April 2026.

Lesotho hosts dams/land (compensated), funds its hydro component, but provides no major upfront capital for water transfer. It receives ~R3.8bn royalties/year (cumulative >R19bn), ~15% of its budget. SA's investment far exceeds Lesotho's monetary input.
