The Prime Minister has misused the #Doordarshan for political messaging through his broadcast on April 18, 2026, while the Model Code of Conduct is in force and elections to the state assemblies of #TamilNadu and #WestBengal are nearing. Usage of the public broadcaster for political messaging during elections constitutes a violation of the MCC. The CPI(M) has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India and has sought initiation of proceedings against the PM and others for this violation. @MABABYCPIM

Now that the delimitation bill linked with women’s reservation bill failed in the parliament, let us look at data on how BJP performed in 12 years in office: 1. Total reported crimes against women (NCRB): Rose from 213,585 cases in 2010 to 448,211 in 2023 (more than doubled) 2. Reported rape cases (NCRB): Increased from roughly 22,000–24,000 around 2010 to 31,516 in 2022 (and similar in recent years) 3. Kidnapping & abduction of women (NCRB): Increased notably 4. Ratio of women BJP MPs: 31 out of 240 (12.92%). This is out of 74 total women MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha (overall women representation is 13.6%). 5. Out of a total 72 ministers appointed by BJP, only 7 are women. 6. BJP & NDA alliance have 21 CMs. Only one is a woman. 7. In the WB elections, TMC fielded 52 women out of a total 291 TMC candidates. BJP fielded 33 out of 294. That is 18% by TMC to 11% by BJP. 8. Of the total 1654 MLAs that BJP has, only 164 or 9.9% are women. 9. Of BJPs lawmakers, 5 BJP lawmakers (MPs/MLAs) face rape charges (IPC 376 and related). 10. According to ADR, 54 BJP MPs and MLAs have declared cases related to crimes against women. Show intent. Nominate more ministers. More CMs (with power). Let more women contest elections. Reject any contestant who has a criminal case abusing women. You don’t need a law to respect women, punish abusers, give more tickets to women contestants. Intent is missing. Integrity is lacking. It is Political posturing. People are wiser. They will see through this…

No PM has ever used a national address to openly criticise and target the opposition in this manner. PM Modi has broken this long-standing democratic norm with his address to the nation tonight. By directly attacking opposition over the Women’s Reservation Bill and likening their actions to ‘foeticide’ and being ‘anti-women’, this speech has made it evident that the BJP is willing to go to any extent to undermine healthy parliamentary conventions and constitutional traditions. It’s evident that Govt has lost its balance after the drubbing it got in the Loksabha yesterday. High time this rhetoric be stoped.. Let the Govt come forward sincerely to address the speedy implementation of Women’s reservation … and don’t meddle with the democratic-federal India . #stopthejhumla #democraticIndia #federalism

VIDEO | Delhi: On PM Narendra Modi's address to the nation, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal says, "I heard the Prime Minister's speech just now, and I was wondering whether the Prime Minister is speaking as Prime Minister or the leader of the BJP in Parliament. Behind the Prime Minister was the national flag, and he was speaking as Prime Minister of India while an election is going on. This is a new low in the politics of India. But I know that neither the Chief Election Commissioner nor any other institution will do anything about it..." (Full video available on PTI Videos - ptivideos.com)

Sweden is committing more than €100 million to a sweeping classroom overhaul: replacing tablets and screens with traditional printed textbooks to help reverse falling student performance and sharpen focus. After more than a decade of embracing digital-first education, Swedish authorities are now pivoting back to paper-based learning. Official data and recent studies cited by the Ministry of Education show that prolonged screen use in class has been linked to shorter attention spans, weaker reading comprehension, and reduced critical-thinking abilities. Research consistently finds that reading on illuminated screens requires greater mental effort and invites more distractions compared to the calm, linear experience of physical books—factors believed to have contributed to declining academic outcomes in recent years. Under the new plan, every student will receive printed textbooks for all core subjects, restoring books as the central learning tool. Digital devices and online resources will remain available as supportive tools, but they will no longer dominate daily instruction. This bold €100+ million investment signals Sweden’s leadership in rethinking the role of technology in education. It underscores a broader, growing recognition worldwide: while screens provide speed and access, the hands-on, distraction-free engagement of physical books supports deeper concentration, stronger memory retention, and more effective long-term learning. By choosing paper over pixels, Sweden is charting a path toward a more balanced, evidence-informed classroom future—one that puts proven pedagogical principles ahead of unchecked digital trends.

A 15-pound honey badger can survive a cobra bite that would kill a full-grown man in under two hours. Then it finishes eating the snake. A biology grad student at the University of Minnesota wanted to know how. She needed badger blood to find out, and the only samples she could get were from two American zoos in San Diego and Indiana. What she found in the DNA was one tiny change. There's a small socket on your muscle cells that your nerves plug into to tell your muscles to move. Cobra venom kills you by jamming that socket shut, so your lungs stop working. The honey badger's socket has a swapped-out amino acid that gives it a positive electrical charge. Cobra venom is also positively charged. Like magnets pointing the wrong way, the venom gets pushed off before it can lock in, and the muscles keep firing. The same workaround showed up separately in hedgehogs and pigs. Mongooses got there too, with a slightly different molecular trick. Four different animals with no shared ancestor all arrived at the same solution because venomous snakes kept biting them for millions of years. That only covers snakes like cobras and mambas. Puff adders work differently, destroying tissue instead of paralyzing muscle, and the DNA trick doesn't help there. So when a puff adder lands a solid bite, the badger collapses into a kind of coma for two or three hours. Then it wakes up groggy and eats the snake anyway. The skin is maybe the unfairest part of all this. It's about a quarter inch thick, rubbery, and so loose it fits like a wetsuit two sizes too big. A lion can clamp its jaws on a honey badger and the badger will twist halfway around inside its own skin and start clawing the lion's face while still in its mouth. Bee stingers barely get through. Porcupine quills don't either. Which brings us back to the bees in that photo. They're annoying. A few sneak through to the face, and enough stings have killed honey badgers in the wild. Honey badgers still die. But they're running three different defense systems at the same time, and one of them is a genetic lottery ticket evolution has pulled four times.

Anantha passed away this morning, around 3 am on 18 April. He went away peacefully. An end that he had prepared himself and all of us for. Leading the kind of life he did and facing death the way he did should be an aspiration for all of us. Ananthapadmanabhan Guruswamy would be remembered for many of his accomplishments and contributions: CEO of Amnesty International in India, the International Programme Director at Greenpeace, CEO of Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives (APPI) and the founder of Socrates. An alumnus of IIT Madras and a former teacher at The School – Krishnamurti Foundation India, he would be remembered as one of the most gifted and amazing minds that could think across fields and come up with out of box solutions. Colleagues in Bharat Jodo Abhiyaan would remember him as an unending source of ideas and energy for our work. We met through his partner Kavita Kuruganti. Over the last five years, I had the honour of calling him my friend — actually, my guide and life coach. The beautiful way he embraced cancer and prepared for death has been a life lesson for me. His body would be kept at home (#606, Petunia Block, Sankalp Central Park, Yadavagiri, Mysuru) till 3pm today before being taken for cremation. Cremation will be done at 4pm in Gokulam. Alvida Ananth, as you begin your ananta journey. Till we join!

In a quiet lab in Mangaluru, a scientist is solving a problem most of us don’t even see. Every day, massive amounts of energy are wasted as heat—lost, unnoticed, gone. But Dr. Sandhya Shenoy chose to chase that invisible loss and turn it into power. Today, she stands among the world’s top 2% scientists, for the third year in a row, recognized by Stanford University for research that could change how we power our future. Her work isn’t just theory. It’s about converting waste heat into electricity, energy that could light homes, run industries, and build a more sustainable world. No spotlight. No noise. Just years of quiet, consistent work, turning something we ignore into something the world needs. Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from loud announcements. They come from people who stay patient, stay curious, and keep showing up—every single day. And somewhere between experiments and persistence, they don’t just change science… They change what’s possible. #IndianScientists #WomenInSTEM #InnovationIndia #womaninScience [Sustainability, Science, Women In STEM, Innovation India, Woman in Science]
