My wife commissioned an artist to depict my PhD journey. There was some creative license taken, but this is largely accurate

I'm collecting stories about campus squirrels. It can be real things that happened, legends, reputations, etc. I've come across squirrel attacks, squirrel clubs, faculty using robots to scare them, students dressing them up in clothes, squirrel statues, squirrel poisonings...

Livin' the dream. On a work trip, and got a voucher for deferring my flight. On a related note, I need to find ways to kill a few hours in Midway.

This is the most exciting hockey news in a minute. The LA Kings are modernizing their 90s look and the Ducks are (sort of) Mighty again. No eggplant and jade, but it is something. Two of the worst uniform sets in the league get an overhaul
icethetics@icethetics

I got a look at both logos and can say this: 🟠 #FlyTogether is a modernized version of the Mighty Ducks logo in orange, black and gold. ⚫️ #GoKingsGo is a modernized version of the Gretzky-era logo in black and silver with a new crown design inside. Haven’t seen jerseys yet.

Let’s be real: If you want your work to have actual impact (beyond citation count), people beyond the academy need to be able to read it. If you only want academics to access your work, it’s likely just a vanity project.

Anyway, putting in more applications and crossing my fingers. If you have words of encouragement and/or pet photos, I would appreciate either. Or heck, I'll take a job if you have an extra one lying around

I'm astounded at how inhumane the process has been. Most positions I never hear back about. Most of the rejection emails are impersonal and nearly identical to each other. A handful have been very pleasant and clearly from actual humans, and I am deeply appreciative of those

Well, tonight I feel like my energy has been drawn entirely out of my body by the job hunt process like salt leeching moisture from a slug On my current search, I have 111 job applications submitted, 9 of which yielded at least one interview, and thus far no offers.
Sarah Morris@SarahR_Morris

Some post-PhD job market transparency, lol: -43 job applications -27 replied to my application (12 automated rejection emails) -15 first round interviews -8 prolonged interview rounds -3 I dropped out mid-rounds -3 last round nos to me -2 official final offers

For those interested in such comparisons, per Grok: The University of Michigan's 2024 Spring Commencement speaker was Brad Meltzer. Meltzer is an award-winning author known for his "I Am" series of historical children's books and has a background that includes hosting television shows and writing comic books. He is a 1992 alumnus of the University of Michigan, having earned a bachelor's degree in history. Meltzer was recommended for a Doctor of Law degree for his accomplishments as an author and his advocacy for history education. He delivered his commencement speech at Michigan Stadium on May 4, 2024.

Squirrels are one of the few common elements of college campuses that seem to be magnets for folklore, superstition, and myth. If you know of some interesting campus squirrel lore, I'd love to hear it!
