Most people don’t know the true story behind gefilte fish.
Fish is one of the foods traditionally eaten three times on Shabbos: Friday night, Shabbos morning, and at Shalosh Seudos, the third meal.
The original tradition was to take a whole fish, usually a whitefish or pike, clean it out, and slice it into thick steaks. The ground fish mixture would then be stuffed back into the hollow center of each slice. That’s where the name comes from: gefilte means “stuffed” in Yiddish. So gefilte fish literally means “stuffed fish.”
Over time, the labor-intensive stuffing step was skipped, and the ground fish mixture was simply shaped into balls or patties and poached. But the name — and the tradition of eating fish three times on Shabbos — remained.
