DA Spokesperson Karabo Khakhau Forced to Withdraw from Federal Council Leadership Race Over Unpaid Tithe
Democratic Alliance national spokesperson and MP Karabo Khakhau has withdrawn from the contest for deputy chairperson of the party’s Federal Council, citing a “forced withdrawal” after the DA refused her a letter of good financial standing over a single missed monthly tithe.
The disqualification, confirmed just weeks before the DA’s elective federal congress on 11 and 12 April at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, has sparked debate within the party about consistency in applying internal rules.
In a statement released on Saturday, Khakhau explained that she mistakenly missed her R4 250 tithe payment in July 2025 a mandatory monthly contribution deducted from MPs’ salaries to fund party activities.
She had paid every month from January to June 2025 and resumed payments in August and September.
On 14 October 2025, the Free State provincial director issued her a letter of demand for the outstanding amount, one day before payday. Within 24 hours, she paid R8 500, covering the July shortfall and her October tithe, and has continued making all subsequent payments.
“I do not owe the DA a cent,” Khakhau declared. “Despite settling the outstanding payment, the DA’s Free State Provincial Executive Committee took a decision to not grant me a letter of good financial standing and this decision was sustained by the DA’s federal executive.”
She added that precedents exist from previous congresses where leaders in similar situations were allowed to contest, including some successful incumbents.
The DA maintains that standard rules for internal elections were followed. Federal congress spokesperson Nazley Sharif said: “The DA applies rules for internal elections, and Khakhau did not meet the requirements to stand as a candidate for the federal congress 2026.”
Khakhau had officially entered the race on 2 March alongside Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, positioning herself as a champion for strengthening the party’s ancillary structures and mobilising what she described as the country’s core voter base “black, young and female”.
In her withdrawal message, she expressed disappointment at being unable to advance her vision of “building structures and winning the future”, but thanked supporters and vowed to continue the fight from within the party.
The position she sought is one of several hotly contested federal council roles at next month’s congress. Other declared candidates for deputy chairperson include deputy minister of water and sanitation Sello Seitlholo, National Assembly deputy speaker Annelie Lotriet, and Western Cape provincial parliament member Thomas Walters.
The episode has drawn attention to the DA’s strict financial compliance requirements for leadership aspirants at a time when the party is seeking to broaden its appeal ahead of future elections. Khakhau’s supporters have questioned whether the enforcement was applied evenly, though the party insists the rules are applied uniformly.
Khakhau remains a sitting DA MP and national spokesperson.l

John Steenhuisen was notoriously in arrears with his monthly tithes for months, if not years, and no action was ever taken against him.
The DA is a party of insiders and outsiders. Sometimes they appoint you to do tasks - like spokesperson - and you can feel included. But you are never an insider.

After securing a long fought victory for a parliamentary oversight committee on the presidency, the DA's hatred of ActionSA was greater than their patriotism when handed the chairmanship to the same ANC that has never held its own president to account.

About 300 years ago, there was a man, when the world couldn’t explain how stars move, he didn’t wait for answers—he created an entirely new kind of mathematics: calculus.
Today, we use supercomputers and rockets to explore space. Yet every single one of them still follows the rules he wrote down. No technology, no screens—just ink and pure genius.
And the most astonishing part? We’re still trying to fully understand it.

Nick Hudson (Private Equity Investor):
Anglo American & Rothschild have captured SA. Let's look at energy.
1. Rothschild’s Martin Kingston chairs BUSA’s B4SA, managing government ties & the Resource Mobilisation Fund.
2. The Fund sends experts in energy modelling, tariffs, law & policy into Ramaphosa’s NECOM.
3. Rothschild advises Treasury on Eskom’s debt.
4. Rothschild guides Eskom’s restructuring & Transnet.
5. Rothschild represents creditors in Eskom’s debt, unbundling.
6. NUMSA says Rothschild controls Eskom & is driving costly renewables under a “climate crisis” agenda.
7. Cheap coal is abandoned, leaving SA indebted, energy‑starved & reliant on Anglo American, which is laughing all the way to the bank.
8. Govt is manipulated by foreign interests.
This is not in the interest of people of any culture, creed or ethnicity

Wow! Deputy Minister asking for an extra R50k a month to be a campaign manager - a fundamentally political role that comes with the territory of being a public rep.
Oh, and an MP gets an extra R50k a month for doing Policy. HZ gets over a mil to top up her retirement.
Top ups for some. Blacklisting for Karabo.
