@emiliesyverson @RadishHarmers @NC_Renic Yeah and we will see that reflect in future headlines and people will continue to catastrophize, it’s not that the job market or social media is getting any better and ameliorating that shock

@GradEnviro @RadishHarmers @NC_Renic Not saying it's 100% just COVID but it could play a role in the current crop of college students being as behind as they are. (Tho it seems to go beyond that and extend down to lower grades too. Middle and high schoolers who also can't read rn.)

Still think we’re understating the impact of AI on university degrees. A growing numbers of students don’t just lack the inclination to read but the *capacity*. Literally unable to read and absorb difficult sentences for an extended period. Same goes for writing.

@RadishHarmers @NC_Renic No one learnt anything those 2-3 years of remote learning, it’s like a wave that will pass through anyone who was 4-15 during Covid

@NC_Renic I on some level believe it from what I've heard from professors, but I'm also confused. Presumably, three years ago, these 18 year olds had functional 15 year old reading skills. They've lost even that to atrophy, in just three years?

@DeepDishEnjoyer This is 1000x better than the typical resume, which fills all whitespace on a single page with illegible, meaningless jargon. Also he’s young. It’s fine.

one succinct observation is that nicholas decker thinks his experience is worthy of a two-page resume

@PriyaSatia We used to say sambandh or rishta depending on context, growing up in a mix of Sanskritized Hindi and Urdu

2/2 class and the very familiar Hindustani/Urdu vocabulary that they’ve been told isn’t “Hindi.” So mid-Hindi sentence, we get: “connection” instead of “raabta” “duty” instead of “farz” “misunderstanding” instead of “galat fahmi”… Ugly undoing of a rich linguistic heritage

1/2 Yes, English is also an Indian language. BUT, the increasing Hinglish of “educated” Hindi-speaking Indians (besides a postcolonial fetishizing of English) seems a product of trying to speak a vernacular that skirts both the unfamiliar Sanskritized vocabulary of school Hindi

@electionsjoe He and Graham bring that sweet MIC cash to South Carolina, no possible way they lose that leverage, but it is being tested.

@nukedwest These people have no real principles, everything is amenable to the "media discourse" which they are ultimately obssessed with more than any actual issue.

@nukedwest I got blocked when I pointed to him that the whole Hasan interview that he was defending was in violation of the BDS against NYT and how he had called it a genocidal rag when the boycott was first mentioned.

@DougHenwood As much I understand the reasoning, it is to focus on class and cost of living issues where the right has always floundered, and then do the climate stuff instead of the opposite.

@aaaudacity Hmm...it's one of his more conflicted novels, will be curious what you make of it. Others are better for sure, but this one is pretty engaging. Try My Name is Red, it's astounding!

the policy solution for climate nowadays is just "build a lot of solar panels, through any means possible" so these articles about messaging aren't really that interesting anymore
Matt Huber@Matthuber78

Hello, it’s me in @nytopinion. The Democratic Party is historically unpopular & hemorrhaging working class voters. Focusing on the issue of climate change —an issue mainly impt to their educated/affluent base—is not a way to reverse this. This marks the end of an era. 👇
