Still think we’re understating the impact of AI on university degrees. A growing numbers of students don’t just lack the inclination to read but the *capacity*. Literally unable to read and absorb difficult sentences for an extended period. Same goes for writing.

@NC_Renic I on some level believe it from what I've heard from professors, but I'm also confused. Presumably, three years ago, these 18 year olds had functional 15 year old reading skills. They've lost even that to atrophy, in just three years?

Slavery was widespread in India from ancient times, just like in every other large settled society, until the 19th C. Slaves were bought, sold, exported, & imported. It wasn't the same as American chattel slavery, but then most forms of slavery aren't.

My boy Matt in the NYT makes some solid arguments that the left in Canada would do well to pay attention to, as climate has become culture-war fodder there too. One does however have to ask whether there was something in the way that the climate left operated that encouraged such culture-war framing. It didn’t have to be this way.
