Deeply humiliating to realize how much this overpriced chunk of plastic has improved my quality of life in just a week.

Great petition. This would cost more than the UK’s entire education, transport, defense, policing, housing, environment, industry, agriculture and employment budgets combined.

@GeorgeTrefgarne I think this is closer to it. Or put another way, don’t do anything then an Englishman would have thought unusual before 1945. Hard to legislate that, though.

@GeorgeTrefgarne In our Christian country, there’s everything wrong with mass Muslim prayer and nothing wrong with a procession on Palm Sunday. It would be mad to ban all public religious displays just to maintain a foolish consistency.

@ZoeJardiniere @DouglasCarswell Once here, is it fair to assume that she would be classed as a refugee and entitled to stay indefinitely if she wished?

@DouglasCarswell On what basis do you assume this person is a "burden"? They & their partner will have right to work. International students contributed £41.9 billion in 2025. Also do you even live in the UK?

The internecine battle about whether “English” is a civic or ethnic identity is very silly and would be easily solved by using “Anglo-Saxon” for the latter.

@BovrilG There are lots of beautiful £1-1.5m family houses in places like Camberwell. People in that bracket will struggle with school fees but are definitely not sending their kids to the local schools. The schools tax is going to change areas like that very fast.

Britain’s migration crisis is now exceeding the Merkel influx in Germany. Paradoxically, this is largely bc of Brexit. Population growth despite below-replacement fertility rate (~1.41): 12m since 2000 and 2.7 since 2020.

Is @Nigel_Farage right to say that "If we take the word ("colonised") out Ratcliffe is accurate & right"? As I point out to him on this week's Political Thinking Sir Jim got his facts wrong & so did Farage when defending him. Ratcliffe claimed the UK population had increased 12 million since 2020. Actually, it increased 2.7m in that time. If he'd said since the year 2000 he would have been right. In a post backing him Farage said “1 million people living in this country don’t speak any English at all”. Actually, the last census showed that 161,000 don’t speak English at all although a further 880,000 could not speak English well. He said "4 million people living in this country barely speak passable English". Actually, 4 million did not speak it as their main language but spoke English either "well" or "very well". Facts matter but so too do ideas, arguments & debates. I explore both at length on Political Thinking. It's a 40 minute conversation you can hear now on @BBCSounds

I'm sorry but it's hard to see people lie about how legal immigration to the United Kingdom works, and say nothing about it. I am a legal immigrant to the UK. In 2023, I had to spent roughly £5,000 for a 2.5 years visa, NHS surcharge, biometric appointment and language tests. I will have to spend £4,000 this year, to extend my visa by another 2.5 years, after which, I'll need to pay again for indefinite leave-to-remain. On top of that, as a legal immigrant, I am understandably required to pay taxes, national insurance and can NOT claim benefits. This on-going myth that legal immigrants are free-loading on UK taxpayers is complete bullshit. If anything, I'm subsidising them. My legal immigrant ass is a net benefit to your country.
Home Office@ukhomeoffice

The British public has footed the bill for an immigration system that feels out of control and unfair. We’re stopping this. It is only fair that migrants with an income or sizeable assets will have to contribute to the cost of their stay, not the taxpayer.

As a migrant, I paid IHS, I pay council tax, Payee, NI, TV license, I pay transport fare if I have to use it (train, tram or bus), I buy my own food, I pay my own rent, light, water and phone bills. I have no recourse to public funds, so how have you footed my bill please?

@muftyawondev @BNooR27 It applies equally to migrants earning less than ca. £50k. Care workers might reasonably believe they’re contributing to the system, but they are not.

@BNooR27 Now this would be understandable if that is what the Hime office handle put up. They could have worded that tweet so people know it’s about asylum seekers and illegals, instead they said migrants. Thats is an umbrella word.

@ukhomeoffice Why should we allow permanent settlement by people who are, after 10-15 years, still earning less than £13k? The proposals are sensible, but don’t go nearly far enough.

The right to stay in Britain must be earned. Those who arrive illegally, break our laws or rely on benefits for over a year could face some of the longest waits for settlement in Europe - up to 30 years.

The Earned Settlement consultation is generally sensible and deserves support. But setting the earnings threshold at £12,570 means that unskilled labourers from the third world will, if they wait long enough, still become our burden. gov.uk/government/con…

@s8mb The only London attraction is the Transport Museum, which you’ve probably already done to death. Visit the National Railway Museum in York, Spa Valley Railway from Tunbridge Wells (or similar elsewhere) or the ride-on models at Bekonscot.

My son absolutely loves trains. Can’t get enough of them - his ideal afternoon is watching videos of them on TV while playing with brio trains and a Duplo train station. What are the best things to do in London with him? We’ve been to the transport museum and I’ve taken him to watch them at Denmark Hill station (where the drivers often toot their horns at him, which he loves). What else might he enjoy?

@createstreets Windows matter, but slavishly replicating original design isn’t the only option even on old houses. (These from Toronto, where double glazing is not optional.)

Why on earth should the Conservatives help get Goodwin with his unpleasant anti-Tory, borderline racist agenda get into parliament?
Tim Downes (He/Him) 🎭🦢🐶🦉🏳️‍🌈@genesian61

@GBPolitcs The Conservatives have no chance whatsoever in Gorton & Denton. Its a fight between Labour, Reform & Greens. Jacob's idea would make a likely Reform victory even more likely. But I doubt Badenoch will listen.

@renewablesmiffy @Frencheconomics Indeed, scaling up production would have little to no impact on global prices, consumption or carbon emissions. But it would help balance of payments, tax revenue and energy security. A clear an unambiguous win.

Announcing the immediate end to the moratorium on new North Sea gas licences and an end to the EPL would be the smartest strategic move this morning. Would completely recast the conversation, and help offset the biggest risk to the UK economy.
