Yesterday in a lesson, two students asked to go the toilet. I said they would need to go one at a time. Miraculously, neither needed the toilet any more. They were lovely students and laughed when I called them out on it, no complaints but it was just going to be a chance to have a gab. If you don’t think loads of students use toilet breaks to bunk off lessons you are mad! I will rarely say ‘no’, esp if it’s obvious a student needs to go but I will say: ‘Can you wait until we have done this task?’ - they usually don’t ask again ‘Can you wait until the end of the lesson?’ - they usually don’t ask again ‘You’ll need to wait for X to come back’ - they usually don’t ask again All these questions also allow for you as teacher to gauge next steps.
