This card just sold for $250 on eBay. $37 in fees. Is it because it’s going to the authenticator? Fucking insane - I don’t even want to send it to them. It’s also in a PSA slab, why would it need to be authenticated? #atobttr #thehobby

2025-26 Topps Chrome Update NBA Analysis & Deep Dive Alright, alright, alright. Topps hooked us up on this one...but I have a feeling it was not intentional. The odds went live for a few minutes before they were quickly yanked back down. Fortunately, the Squatch has some dope-ass followers. I was alerted almost immediately and grabbed everything I needed before the window slammed shut. Then came one of the fastest drives home from Chicago in recorded history. I could not wait to dig into this thing. I spent nearly the entire night pulling apart the odds and figuring out exactly what Topps has buried beneath. And believe me, there is a lot here. For the nerd-inclined, we have tons of numbers as usual, and a few things Topps probably did not expect us to uncover this early. Your social media feed is about to be swallowed by this madness. I'm here to help you make sense of it before the influencers start pounding you with the FOMO sledge hammer. So carve out some time and journey with me through the labyrinth of what will be one of the most frenzied, chaotic, and heavily chased releases of the year. Welcome to 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update NBA. Part 1: The Basics Pre-orders for this massive release took place on July 7th with Hobby boxes landing at $530, Jumbo at $1,080, and Value Boxes at $45. For the first time ever, unwrapped Megas showed up shortly after at $85, and if you look around you should be able to find sealed boxes also at $85, though maybe not from Topps direct. Finally, Fanatics Megas dropped at $100/box. For all of you that were with me for the inaugural licensed NBA Chrome release, you'll be saddened to know the Hanger Box honey hole will not be a thing for Chrome Update, though I fully expect them to come back for next season's Chrome release. Box dynamics should all be typical, aside from Breaker's Delight moving to 12 cards from 10. Part 2: Production Numbers Total cards in product: 53,781,650 It makes perfect sense to compare this to the regular NBA Chrome release, which had 89,850,600, for a decrease of 40.1%. Based on past baseball numbers of Chrome Update vs Chrome, this is a slightly larger drop-off than we saw for 2025 Chrome MLB, which was -31.3%. Total Production by Format and how that compares to 2025/26 NBA Chrome: Hobby: 97,152 boxes (8,096 cases) ---> -7% Jumbo: 26,560 boxes (3,320 cases) ----> -23.3% Breaker's Delight: 26,200 boxes (4,367 cases) ----> -16.5% Value Boxes: 900,486 boxes (22,512 cases) ----> -22.7% Mega Boxes: 374,100 boxes (18,705 cases) ----> -39% Fanatics Megas: 30,080 boxes (1,504 cases) ----> 0% Sapphire: 10,075 boxes (1,008 cases) ----> -3.7% None of these numbers are surprising since we already knew overall production dropped by ~40% from the regular Chrome release. Format decreases across the board are generally <40% due to the elimination of Hangers as a format. Fanatics Megas and Sapphire are both stagnant, as we would also expect. Part 3: Heat Map Expected Hit Rates per box: Hobby: 1 auto, 13 parallels, 11.8 inserts, 2.34 numbered cards Jumbo: 3 autos, 23 parallels, 15.8 inserts, 3.46 numbered cards Value: 1 auto per 18.7 boxes (2.14 per case), 4.65 parallels, 2 inserts, 1 numbered card per 3.24 boxes Mega: 1 auto per 9.5 boxes (2.1 per case), 14.6 parallels, 3 inserts, 1 numbered per 1.72 boxes Fanatics Mega: 1 auto per 9.07 boxes, 14.6 parallels, 3 inserts, 1 numbered per 1.7 boxes I want to point out there were a couple slight assumptions made to come up with the hit rates. 1) Both Megas (X-fractors) and Fanatics Megas (Skylight Refractors) state exclusive parallels fall 1 per pack, but Topps likes to round these numbers up. In the past, these have consistently produced 10 exclusive parallels per box (1 per 0.7 packs). I fully expect this to remain constant, so that is what I'm basing my numbers on. 2) Breaker's Delight is still a bit cloudy. The box states they contain 12 cards, not 10 as they had before. The problem is, odds do not state what the extra cards consist of. They clearly state there is no base in Delight boxes. Odds say 1 base refractor per box, and 1 Geometric per 3 boxes, but I don't think either of these are accurate. I think this will look more like 5 cards/box combined between base Geometric & Base Refractors. So here's what I'm going with on Delight dynamics. Please understand it may require a bit of adjusting once we see breaks of the product, but this should put us very close. Delight: 2 autos, 8 parallels, 2 inserts, 3.8 numbered cards Part 4: More Heat Percentage of Numbered Autos: It's important to know which formats provide a higher probability of numbered autos vs base autos. Across the product, the percentage of numbered autos in Chrome Update is 61.6%. For context, for NBA Chrome, this was 51.9%. % of Numbered Autos by format: 1) Jumbo- 74.33% 2) Hobby- 74.08% 3) Delight- 68.1% 4) Fanatics Mega- 60.19% 5) Mega- 38.3% 6) Value- 28.06% Rare Inserts: Following are all the inserts classified as "rare" and which formats they're in. Hobby/Jumbo/Delight: Captains, Celebracion, Radiating Rookies, Shadow Etch Value/Mega/Fanatics Mega: Paradox, Fanatical, Glass Canvas All Formats: Helix, Minionfractor, Alter Egos This is kind of a big deal. We all know Hobby Formats are going to go bonkers in price and be unattainable for a large swath of collectors. NBA Chrome showed us that some of the best inserts can find their way to retail. Not only that, some of the retail exclusive inserts are also very desirable. So I combined all the rare inserts to see how often you should expect a "rare insert" from each format: Hobby: 1 rare insert per 5.96 boxes (~2 per case) Jumbo: 1 rare insert per 3.94 boxes (~2 per case) Delight: 1 rare insert per 6.05 boxes (~1 per case) Value: 1 rare insert per 22.2 boxes (~1.8 per case) Mega: 1 rare insert per 11.3 boxes (~1.8 per case) Fanatics Mega: 1 rare insert per 6.67 boxes (~3 per case- 2 of which will be Fanaticals) I have to point out that Fanatics Megas cheated a bit in this category. By definition, "Rare Inserts" are classified as inserts that fall 1 per case or rarer since Topps does not technically have case hits. The stats for Fanatics Megas are padded a bit by the popular "Fanaticals" insert. While Fanaticals are found in all 3 retail formats (Value, Mega, Fanatics Mega), they are tougher than one per case in only Values & Megas. In Fanatics Megas, they fall almost 2 per case. I would be doing them a disservice if I excluded them from the list because they truly are a rare insert. Fanatics Megas just happen to have gobs of them. Outside of Fanaticals, other rare inserts should still be found almost precisely 1 per case of Fanatics Megas. Part 5: The Sapphire Dilemma You’ll notice Sapphire is missing from the Heat Map. We have the odds, but because it will be a separate release, I’ll give it the full treatment when the time comes. That said, there is something I need to flag immediately, just in case the odds Topps posted are actually correct. From an autograph standpoint, this would be the most absurdly loaded Sapphire product we have ever seen. The math says 2.23 autos per box. And as we saw with Topps Chrome NBA Sapphire, every one of those autos should be Gold /50 or better. That is already ridiculous. But we're not done. On the Inserts side, Infinite should fall once every two cases, while a Sapphire Selections base or parallel show up in ~90% of boxes. Altogether, the total insert hit rate lands at almost exactly one per box. We've never seen a Sapphire product with these dynamics, even that NBA Chrome Sapphire that went stratospheric. If these odds hold true, this thing is going to be completely unhinged. And all the numbers reconcile nicely, so it's definitely possible we're looking at the next product that will make a handful of breakers pallets of money. But I’m going to chill on this for now. There is always a chance Topps revises the odds before release, and it just feels weird at this point. We’ll definitely revisit Sapphire when the release gets closer. Part 6: The Big Boys Alright. Enough foreplay. It’s time to talk about the cards everyone is really here for. The cards that will dominate social media and send breakers into full-blown hysterics...the Debut Patch Autos. According to checklists, there are a total of 93 Debut Patch Autos, as well as 6 Debut Patches without autos. These are not merely some of the biggest cards of the year. A few have a chance to be some of the most important modern basketball cards produced this decade. This product has a legitimate chance to produce multiple seven-figure cards, with the Cooper Flagg Debut Patch Auto likely destined to blow long by a measly million-dollar valuation. Naturally, everyone wants to know where they’re hiding. Which format gives you the best chance to pull one? Well, we have a problem. Here’s what I know: The posted odds show Debut Patch Autos in every format, although your chances of pulling one from retail appear to be majestically brutal. But you see, the odds allow us to calculate exactly how many packs of each SKU were produced. Those figures can be cross-checked a thousand different ways, most notably against every numbered parallel in the product. And nearly everything reconciles beautifully. Except the Debut Patch Autos. Based on the stated odds, only 31 of the 93 Debut Patch Autos are actually accounted for. That leaves a full two-thirds of them missing. There is absolutely no chance Topps inserted only 31 of the 93 cards and simply forgot about the rest. Something in the published odds is wrong, incomplete, or both. Also, there is no odds entry whatsoever for the non-autographed Debut Patches. So, at the moment, I cannot even tell you which formats are capable of producing one of those 6 cards. My hope is that when Topps reposts the odds, likely moments before launch, we’ll see corrected Debut Patch figures. If that happens, I’ll update the numbers immediately and break down exactly how many appear to be allocated to each format. Until then, I can only work with the numbers Topps gave us. And in the case of the Debut Patch Autos, those numbers are garbage. Maybe recalibrating them is why the odds were pulled in the first place. Honestly, I have no idea. How's that for a buzzkill? It's also worth mentioning, this is not the first time Topps has butchered odds on Debut Patch Autos. Going back to 2025 Topps Chrome Update MLB, those odds were also a hot mess. In fact, there were two separate entries for Debut Patch Autos...and they were entirely different. I don't understand Topps' aversion to producing accurate odds for the some of the biggest hits of the year, but it's definitely a trend. Man, how I would love some time with that spreadsheet before it goes live. You gotta do better than releasing such janky data on such massive hits. Topps, you need better nerds. Part 7: Hobby vs Retail Autos If you've paid attention to the baseball market recently, you'll notice Topps has been doing this thing. For their last two major Chromified products, Finest and Topps Chrome, they have split the auto checklists such that the autos pulled from retail formats are predominantly bottom-dwellers. With that in mind, let me clarify, from an auto standpoint, which subsets are pullable from which formats. All formats: Topps Chrome Autos, Rookie Lava Lamp Autos Hobby formats only: Havoc Marks, 1980-81 Topps Autos, Future Stars Autos, Druski & Spike Lee Autos Retail formats only: Chromographs What does this mean? Though there are definitely more autos available in Hobby formats, all the best names have autos pullable from retail as well. There is no secret auto checklist tucked inside the most expensive formats that you just can't access from retail. There is a plethora of huge autos available in all formats, which is refreshing. I will remind you that hobby formats will produce far more numbered autos. But, that's understandable. Part 8: Value Map Based on pre-order pricing of $530/Hobby, $1,080/Jumbo & retail pricing of $45/Value, $85/Mega, & $100/Fanatics Mega. Drop pricing will likely be higher. Delight not included because pricing is unknown but will definitely be absurd. $/Card 1) Value- $1.61 2) Mega- $2.02 3) Fanatics Mega- $2.38 4) Hobby- $6.63 5) Jumbo- $8.18 $/Parallel 1) Mega- $5.83 2) Fanatics Mega- $6.86 3) Value- $9.68 4) Hobby- $40.83 5) Jumbo- $47.06 $/Auto 1) Jumbo- $360 2) Hobby- $530 3) Mega- $805.80 4) Value- $841.50 5) Fanatics Mega- $907 $/# Card 1) Value- $145.80 2) Mega- $146.20 3) Fanatics Mega- $169 4) Hobby- $226.50 5) Jumbo- $312.14 $/# Auto 1) Jumbo- $484.33 2) Hobby- $715.44 3) Fanatics Mega- $1,506.89 4) Mega- $2,104.47 5) Value- $2,998.93 $/Rare Insert 1) Fanatics Mega- $667 2) Mega- $957.10 3) Value- $999.45 4) Hobby- $3,158.80 5) Jumbo- $4,255.20 $/Quality Hit (Quality Hit is defined as any Parallel or Insert # ≤/75, any case hit or rarer Insert, any Auto # ≤/100) 1) Fanatics Mega- $221.40 2) Value- $368.46 3) Mega- $410.21 4) Hobby- $507.18 5) Jumbo- $556.20 Part 9: What Would the Squatch Do? Let me just be frank...this shit is going up. A lot. All of it. If you remember the frenzy surrounding 2025-26 Topps Chrome NBA, this release may eclipse it. There is less product, and the biggest cards are even bigger. Is it worth ripping at retail? That is debatable. This stuff is not for the faint of heart. You can get absolutely smoked and have very little left to show for it. There is also no obvious cheap hack like we found with NBA Chrome Hangers. The premium formats are going nuclear. Hobby and Jumbo will double in price. Delight will start at an absurd number and probably become even more ludicrous from there. As Hobby and Jumbo disappear into the stratosphere, the rest of us will be fighting over Megas and Value Boxes. If you see any of this near retail, I suggest grabbing it. Rip it. Stash it. Sell it later. I do not particularly care which one you choose. I just don't think you will regret having it. NBA Chrome Megas are around $250 now. Every time I saw one at $70, I cursed inwardly about how expensive it was and walked away. Had I instead snagged a few every time I saw them, I would probably be significantly less bitter about them today. And if you still have boxes of this sitting in your vault a year from now, especially if major Debut Patches are still unaccounted for, I suspect you will be very happy you held them. My preferred formats, in order: Hobby, Fanatics Megas, Jumbo, Megas, Value. Every format has something going for it. Even the lowly Value Box offers the best shot at pulling every available parallel and insert. Fanatics Megas lap the field for Retail Rare Inserts and retail-exclusive autos. Jumbo is king for autographs overall. Hobby reigns supreme for the non-retail rare inserts, outside of Helix, which is actually best chased in Value Boxes. The only format I struggle to recommend is Delight. Not because it is not juiced to the gills. It absolutely is. But the only price I have seen is $3,500 per box, and it is hard to recommend spending used-car money on a few boxes of basketball cards. Ultimately, though, the format debate is secondary. If you find any of this somewhere close to retail, buy it. I am not condoning the absurd pricing. I hate it as much as anyone. But I also thought regular NBA Chrome was overpriced at launch, and I admit I was a moron. This time, I am not making the same mistake. Part 10: About Those Print Runs I know this has been a journey. And if you are still here after all of that, I see you. I appreciate you. You're a weirdo...and you are awesome. And now we have reached the part where I normally dump an absurd number of print-run calculations directly into the post. Everything from base numbers to all the unnumbered parallels to every insert and unnumbered auto. All of it. And I'm still doing that. I am publishing every number. In fact, it's already posted. I am just doing it a little differently this time. The complete print-run breakdown is going directly to my Substack, where it can live as an actual updatable reference instead of getting buried beneath all the social media noise without any chance of being updated as necessary. X is goofy like that. And no, you do not have to pay to see it. The entire breakdown with print runs will be free for the first week. You can find it here: @slabsquatch" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@slabsquatch After the first week, the print-run database will move behind a measly $7/mo paywall. So read it, bookmark it, screenshot it, tattoo the important numbers on your forearm. Do whatever you need to do. #thehobby #SlabSquatchAnalytics #2025ToppsChromeUpdateNBA
