@jujulemons Maybe there is something wrong with me but going past Torness on the train to Edinburgh, it has aways struck me as a oddly attractive building.

@moorehn @mbeisen Even the interior of Oman is stunning and muscat is a lovely city. Basically the opposite of Dubai.

@mbeisen you're right about Oman! It sounds as though you've been lucky enough to visit?

I realized I've only seen maps of the Strait of Hormuz and was curious what it actually looks like. It's majestic! It could be a tourist destination

It is lack of confidence, more than anything else, that kills a civilization. We can destroy ourselves by cynicism and disillusion, just as effectively as by bombs. - Lord Kenneth Clark, 1903-83, art historian and narrator of his peerless epic 'Civilization' 1969.

@brownliberite Plus frankly the attitude of people in French villages is not to care about appearances - Many houses would just have unpainted walls/cinder bricks/unkept lawns etc. Whereas the British are acutely aware of all of the social niceties which contributes to rich feeling imo

@brownliberite In my experience the deep south of France and Herefordshire were similar. Larger places Tarbes/Pau, Hereford/Ross on Wye were similar. In the villages the difference imo stems from distance to real wealth(paris/london)&a complete apathy to credit.

Is there any reason why the British countryside seems incredibly rich while the French rural middle seems incredibly poor

@johnkonrad I am no fan of our PM but the 'special relationship' is largely a myth. Your President and VP insulted our war-dead after we followed America into two disastrous conflicts. Before you get to lend-lease, Suez, Grenada, Falklands etc. It's generally been transactional for the USA

“To read great books does not mean one becomes ‘bookish’; it means that something of the terrible insight of Dostoyevsky, of the richly-charged imagination of Shakespeare, of the luminous wisdom of Goethe, actually passes into the personality of the reader; so that in contact with the chaos of ordinary life certain free and flowing outlines emerge, like the forms of some classic picture, endowing both people and things with a grandeur beyond what is visible to the superficial glance.” —John Cowper Powys
Andrew Tate@Cobratate

I’m way too smart to read books lol. Books are for dummies. “Omg did you hear about what I read” No dipshit I didn’t. Your wife’s ugly why the fuck are you reading a book. You don’t even own a jet you’re poor. Kill yourself.

The Wikipedia page on Britain's lost stately homes is one of the saddest things online. "All three heirs to the estate were killed in the First World War"; "the site of the west wing is now under a slip road of junction 25 of the M1"; "briefly used as council offices in the 1950s".
Michael Merrick@michael_merrick

Between 1900 and 1970, around 2000 country houses were lost - for a bunch of reasons, but death taxes was right up there. Just an unimaginable loss of heritage. Here, Crofton Hall just outside Carlisle, home to the Brisco family for 500yrs, demolished 1955

I say this literally every fortnight now, but you can’t have a social contract where you ask 95% of the population to pay more money and obey the law, while letting 5% of the population break any rule they want to without punishment. Children in nursery class can work that out. Yet our government(s) and judiciary can’t. You are creating the perfect conditions for civil unrest and populism. It will get ugly, and it won’t be thanks to “Russian Disinformation” or “Right Wing Agitators”, it will be because soft men create hard times.

I hate to burst the EDM bubble but they are as effective as a one legged man in an arse kicking competition. They are not debated. They are not voted upon. They initiate no legislation. They are the equivalent of Parliamentary graffiti and we should get rid of them.

@Manifesttext @TiceRichard He also stated "I am very clear on this, when members go into another member’s constituency, they should let the member know in advance of that visit." So if a minister speaks at a political event say the Policy Exchange Winter Party they would need to tell Rachel....

@GrantRafferty @TiceRichard The precedent you refer to for Whitehall is not relevant. Hoyle stated. "But if one is doing it in an official position and is going to a synagogue as an invite, it is only right that it is on all of us to ensure that the Member of Parliament is aware"

I am disgusted at Labour MP Rachel Blake, who decided to make a cheap political point over my visit to a synagogue in the same constituency as the Houses of Parliament. Why are so many Labour MPs just deeply antisemitic?
