Last Meeting James Arness visited John Wayne one last time. Arness stepped inside the Duke's house and saw him resting in the den, thinner than he remembered. Duke looked away for a moment, when he turned back his voice dropped. "I'm not scared Jim...just tired." Arness gripped his hand, "You gave us everything Duke and you never quit," Duke closed his eyes and whispered, "Neither did you." When Arness stood to leave, he paused at the door looking back at the man who had changed his life and said, "I'll ride with you again someday." Wayne didn't answer, but his hand lifted just slightly, like tipping a hat. Arness walked out wiping his eyes before anyone saw him. A few months later, John Wayne passed. Arness never spoke of that visit again. At the funeral, Arness stood alone hat in hand. He didn't cry aloud, but everyone knew his heart was broken. (L) On the set of "Hondo."
