Here is the list of books Scholastic says schools can exclude. Sadly, Efren Divided is amongst them. Scholastic, please help us feel seen and valued, not excluded. Don't pander to those who wish to erase/marginalize us further. @Scholastic docs.google.com/document/d/1X_…

@FitFounder Any thought on using a mouth guard to discourage mouth breathing instead of tape?

For the past year I’ve been mouth taping for sleep and it's changed my life. Here’s what I learned: Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. Keep in mind that there are limited studies around mouth taping. Also, people who have sinus issues, severe cases of sleep apnea, or who are morbidly obese should not try this. Lastly, this worked for me. I'm not saying it'll work for you. As always do your own research and your mileage may vary. What is mouth taping? Mouth taping is a treatment used to encourage nose breathing during sleep. Some people also use it during the day to train themselves to breathe through their nose. Why mouth taping? I originally did mouth taping for my oral health. Mouth breathing can disrupt the oral microbiome, especially at night. When I started doing it I realized the major impact it had was on my sleep. Ever since I was a kid my sleep had always been horrible. Getting to sleep was hard. I would also wake up multiple times a night I’d struggle to get back to sleep. What I didn’t know was mouth breathing was harmful to my sleep, teeth, and overall health. People who mouth breathe are more likely to develop sleep disorders & invite tooth decay. This is because mouth breathing forces your lungs to take in too much air, which can cause snoring & can affect your oral health. Nose breathing benefits for the brain and body Researchers at the University of Korea did a study on mouth breathing. They found that people who breathed through their mouths had decreased function in their brains (1) A recent study done by Baylor University found that exercising using nasal breathing increased blood flow to the brain (2) Nasal breathing is also beneficial for your sleep, teeth, and overall health. Nose breathing puts your body in a relaxed state & can reduce symptoms of sleep apnea. It assists in creating a healthy oral microbiome as saliva helps keep your teeth clean while increasing nitric oxide production. Breathing through the nose allows for better cognitive function. Although mouth taping is fringe at the moment high level athletes are starting to use it. One of the top footballers on the planet Erling Haaland tapes his mouth to go to sleep every night. The world's #1 women’s tennis player Iga Swiatek practices with a strip of tape across her mouth to improve her endurance. That said, here's what I learned from a year of taping my mouth to sleep: Lesson #1 - Sleep improved dramatically My sleep scores went up by a factor of 5-10% instantly. I was getting to sleep faster and I was able to stay asleep throughout the night. Every morning I’d wake up more refreshed as a result of getting deeper sleep. Lesson #2 - My oral health improved At the next cleaning, my dentist noticed a change in the amount of plaque buildup in my teeth. I went from having to get my teeth cleaned every 4 months to every 6 months. Lesson #3 - You either use your nose or you lose your nose. The less you use the nose the harder it will be to breathe through it. The more you use the nose the easier it will be to breathe through it. The more I taped my mouth for bed the more I found myself breathing through my nose throughout the day. Lesson #4 - Increase in energy Because I was getting better sleep my energy levels increased by a slight margin throughout the day. Lesson #5 - Sleep is the lead domino I've always dealt with multiple sleep disruptions at night. After taping my mouth most nights I go to sleep with almost zero disruptions. Getting better sleep helps with recovery & heart health, which affects my energy & mental health the next day. Lesson #6 - Better focus I started to tape my mouth while doing work in front of the computer. I found that I can focus for longer periods of time breathing through the nose as opposed to the mouth. Lesson #7 - I’ve slowly become a natural nose breather I used to breathe through my mouth as the primary means of taking in oxygen. When I tried to breathe through my nose it would be hard and uncomfortable. Now that I’ve taped my mouth for sleep I’ve found that it’s easier to use my nose for breathing and I automatically keep my mouth closed throughout the day. How do I tape my mouth? I first used a cheap 3M non-allergenic tape from Amazon. I taped the top & bottom of my mouth shut before I slept. That worked okay. Since then I’ve tried every brand of mouth tape available and settled on a brand called Better Sleep mouth tape. I find the material and the way it’s designed acts as an effective way to keep the mouth shut while sleeping. Here’s a link to the brand: bettermouthtape.com What now? I'm going to continue to tape my mouth to go to sleep because it's improved my life immensely. Having more focus, more energy, being able to sleep through the right and improving my dental health is a blessing. I'm experiencing too many benefits for me to stop doing it now. What are your thoughts on mouth taping? I'd love to hear from you in the comments section. Also, if you got value out of this then please share it with your friends and follow me @FitFounder Sources: 1: tinyurl.com/2g75vj7y 2: digitalcommons.wku.edu/ijesab/vol2/is…

Look at that. Encased in crunchy honey toffee. I used Yorkshire honey for this, with a small amount of Polish buckwheat honey. Buckwheat honey is one of the strongest honeys you can get. It’s pretty unpalatable (smells like a pissy phone booth) but it mellows out to give amazing honey once cooked. I use it every honey-flavour item and boy does it deliver. 🍯

As we come increasingly closer to a new school year, I beg you all to ditch those induction lessons you have planned for your classes. The lessons where you state rules and expectations and ask them about themselves - 20 minutes of content in an hour's lesson. Dead time.

“In one of the most notable moments in sports history, Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped thinking he had completed the race. A Spanish athlete, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him, and after realizing what was happening, he started shouting at the Kenyan for him to continue running; but Mutai didn't understand his Spanish. Fernandez eventually caught up to him and instead of passing him, he pushed him to victory. A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do that?" Ivan replied, “My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win.” The journalist insisted “But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win.” The journalist insisted again, “But you could have won!”Ivan looked at him & replied, “But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of that medal? What would my Mom think of that?” Values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children? Let us not teach our kids the wrong ways to WIN.” Calltoactivism

This is crazy. “For 13 thousand dollars, Englishman Brendon Grimshaw bought a tiny uninhabited island in the Seychelles and moved there forever. When Grimshaw was under forty, he quit his job as a newspaper editor and started a new life. By this time, no human had set foot on the island for 50 years. As befits a real Robinson, Brendon found himself a companion from among the natives. His name was René Lafortin. Together with Rene, Brendon began to equip his new home. While René came to the island only occasionally, Brendon lived on it for decades by himself, never leaving. For 39 years, Grimshaw and Lafortin planted 16 thousand trees with their own hands and built almost 5 kilometers of paths. In 2007, Rene Lafortin died, and Brendon was left all alone on the island. He was 81 years old. He attracted 2,000 new bird species to the island and introduced more than a hundred giant tortoises, which in the rest of the world (including the Seychelles) were already on the verge of extinction. Thanks to Grimshaw's efforts, the once deserted island now hosts two-thirds of the Seychelles' fauna. An abandoned piece of land has turned into a real paradise. A few years ago, the prince of Saudi Arabia offered Brendon Grimshaw $50 million for the island, but he refused. “I don’t want the island to become a favorite vacation spot for the rich. Better let it be a national park that everyone can enjoy.” And he achieved just that. In 2008 the island was indeed declared a national park.”

Children's book twitter, do you have suggestions for 11 yr old boy who wants war books in similar vein to Tom Palmer, Michael Morpurgo & Number the Stars by Lois Lowry? Bonus pts if they're on Accelerated Reader (shouldn't matter but does right now). Not fantasy & not too long!
