Male privilege is SO real. I know we’ve spoken about this before but some of us who do choose to run in the dark don’t want to “be safe, be seen” because having a flashing light on me just notifies everyone I am running solo. I dress like a ninja and run in the shadows.
I’ve had to hide in peoples driveways when I’ve felt scared. I’ve had to change my route suddenly because I’ve felt unsafe. I’ve had to not wear headphones because I need to hear every sound. I have to be hyper aware of who is ahead of me, could be around me and is behind me. Do men have to do this? No. Do I ever relax on an evening run? No. Do I carry on running? Yes. Why? Because despite the apprehension, I refuse to allow men to dictate when I can and can’t run because they cannot control their own behaviour. That’s on them to not attack and rape women. Not on me. Rant over.
